SEARCH Employee Turns a Personal Struggle into Opportunity
 |
Success Story Contest nomination submitted by: Shantel Hayward,
Employment Services Case Manager
|
Russhane Harris, Stabilization Services Housing Coordinator, found SEARCH after she was evacuated from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Houston offered job security and a safe place to stay for Russhane and her then ten-year-old son. Russhane says it's no coincidence that she is now employed at SEARCH. For many years in New Orleans she was always, even if indirectly, working for social service organizations. Her personal mantra is, "have passion for what you do, and compassion for people." Kind Mike, My Life on the Street
We continue our series with former SEARCH client, Michael O'Connor!"Billy was there with Linda when I got there. I gave him $5.00. Of course he didn't want it, his pride and all, but I insisted he take it because no one had come by to give any money for him. Linda's jaw fell open and she said, "I have never seen anyone out here do that, you are too kind. Michael, that is what we will call you, you are now Kind Mike." That is how I got my street nickname."
$1.00 from each "Kind Mike" book purchased at retail from Amazon.com will go to SEARCH Homeless Services. Purchase book here.
