Dear Friends:

An attitude of gratitude...
The power of positive thinking...
Dare to dream then live your dream...

These powerful phrases remind us how important a person's mindset is when adversity lurks.  Even when it's hard to find the energy, a smile can bring a person to new heights.  At SEARCH, our highly skilled case managers work with our clients to envision realistic goals, then make plans to reach them.  Moving from the streets to self-sufficiency takes tremendous fortitude and tenacity.  Your continued support helps SEARCH's clients rally the strength and positive outlook and return to stability.

SEARCH Employee Turns a Personal Struggle into Opportunity

Russhane Harris
Success Story Contest nomination submitted by: Shantel Hayward,
Employment Services Case Manager
Russhane Harris, Stabilization Services Housing Coordinator, found SEARCH after she was evacuated from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Houston offered job security and a safe place to stay for Russhane and her then ten-year-old son.

Russhane says it's no coincidence that she is now employed at SEARCH. For many years in New Orleans she was always, even if indirectly, working for social service organizations. Her personal mantra is, "have passion for what you do, and compassion for people." Read more.

Kind Mike, My Life on the Street
Kind Mike - My Life on the Street book cover

We continue our series with former SEARCH client, Michael O'Connor!

"Billy was there with Linda when I got there. I gave him $5.00. Of course he didn't want it, his pride and all, but I insisted he take it because no one had come by to give any money for him. Linda's jaw fell open and she said, "I have never seen anyone out here do that, you are too kind. Michael, that is what we will call you, you are now Kind Mike." That is how I got my street nickname."

$1.00 from each "Kind Mike" book purchased at retail from Amazon.com will go to SEARCH Homeless Services. Purchase book here.

Tip of the Week
Always smile and make eye contact when you come across a homeless individual. This small gesture of encouragement reinforces value, self-worth and dignity. You too can help SEARCH strive to foster these qualities in our clients.
