Happy April Everyone!

Doesn't all this spring weather make you want to get your house in order?  I hope so because an orderly home is a more peaceful home.

One of the biggest issues, with most of my clients, is paper.  Most of the time this paper comes in the form of mail.  When dealing with mail there are several things you can do to stay on top of it so it does not become another mountain of paper on your desk or table.

Let's jump in and talk about some strategies and actions you can take to eliminate some mail and deal with the mail each and every day.

Next month we will talk about attacking the clutter in the garage!   Who knows you might actually be able to park your car in the garage after next month's newsletter!

SORTING MAIL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Mail is one of those things like death and taxes.  You are going to get mail whether you want to or not.  The best way to deal with mail is as soon as possible, sooner rather than later, or right now!
Go through your mail.......EVERYDAY!  Stand near a trash can, recycle container or shredder or a bag or box designated for shredding and make quick work of sorting through each piece of mail.  If you don't have time, right then, to open each piece of mail,
 quickly pull out those letters or mailings that you know need your attention; an invitation, a bill, a letter, etc.  Set those aside and go back through what is left.
Be very picky about what you keep to look at later or read from all the other mail.
The majority of other things, that most people find in their mail are:  credit card offers, privacy information from companies about how they are working to protect your privacy, solicitations for donations, coupons, direct mailings, catalogs and magazines.
Coupons are great, but only if you save the ones you know you are going to use and you keep up with them enough to use them.
Privacy mailings  you've read one, you've read them all.
Charities are wonderful and we should all be giving back, but think about making a list, at the beginning of the year, of all the charities you would like to contribute to.  Donate money, once a month, to one of those charities, and be done with it for the year.  You may only give to a couple of charities, that is fine, my point is donate once and be done with it for the year.  That way you don't have to keep the mailings to remind you to donate.
Credit card offers - it goes without saying, you probably don't need another credit card so shred those immediately.
Magazines. Pay attention to how many magazines you are receiving each month.  Do you actually have all the time you need to read them all in a timely manner?
Catalogs.  There are so many of them and you feel like you should look through them so you don't miss anything.  Catalog "shopping" can waste a lot of valuable time and be an expensive endeavor; you didn't even know you wanted something until you opened the catalog and there it was.  Try to spend time on those catalogs to buy things for you, your home or your family that you really need!
MAIL STATION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If I don't have time to open my mail or have mail I have set aside to go through later, I put all of that mail in one spot!  I only have a few pieces of mail that fit in that category so it goes on my sideboard in my dining room.  If you have several pieces or days and days worth of mail, I suggest putting it in a container of some sort such as a basket. Once it goes in the basket, don't leave it there!  Schedule time to attack it completely because it will only pile up.  When it piles up too much you then become overwhelmed and it becomes a seemingly insurmountable task!

If there are several people, in the home, that receive mail, consider a separate basket for each person.

If you have a real issue with opening mail, many people do, have a trusted, neutral party go through the mail and sort out the important mail and get rid of the rest. This brings a large task down to a manageable level and will relieve you of much of the stress of deciding what to keep and what to trash, shred or recycle.
                                GETTING RID OF JUNK MAIL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 This is the biggie - getting rid of the junk mail.  This is not an incredibly easy process, but if you will take the time to do it, you will reap the benefits by having much less mail to swim through.
If you are an APP kind of person, go to the APPS section on your Android,  IPHONE or IPAD and find the PAPER KARMA APP that helps you rid of junk mail.  You take a picture of the mailing label on the junk mail and send it to PAPER KARMA and they do the rest!!  I don't get a lot of junk mail so I have not tried this but the reviews I have read said it is easy and they love it!
I hope this e-mail helps to relive some of the mail clutter and confusion in your home.  Remember, today's mail is tomorrow's pile, so go through your mail as soon as possible and don't let it pile up on you.  If you have a pile already started, that you need help going through, to get you to a new beginning, give me a call and I will be glad to make quick work of it!!
Happy De-Cluttering!
