2011 Contest Results Are Here!

It's been a long wait since January when our 2011 contest officially began, but that wait has been full of hard work and deliberation! This was the first year we required Finalists to send us their physical pieces, and the result was an even more rigorous task for the judges - a task we believe was well worth the effort. Our winners this year include designs that are very challenging to photograph, but very exciting in person!
 | "Chic Biker Cuff" Bracelet by Patty Barnes |
In fact, our judges found so many pieces equally impressive that the 2011 Grand Prize has been split between two very different but equally innovative designs!
Our First Place Winner in the Polymer Clay Category, "Chic Biker Cuff" Bracelet by Patty Barnes (Three Rivers, TX), has earned one of this year's Co-Grand Prizes. Our judges were impressed with both the skill and uniqueness displayed in Patty's bracelet. Her goal was to create a faux leather piece out of polymer clay. She says about her winning design that "the use of polymer clay to create the cuff allowed me to explore a variety of surface textures, decorations and embellishments ... now I'm working on a series of faux leather cuffs for other styles such as Western, Punk Rock, Disco, Steampunk and Avant-Garde Modern. This concept has challenged me to stretch my skills as well as my creative muse." The judges agreed that Patty successfully challenged herself - at first, many of them thought Patty's cuff actually was leather!
 | "Asymmetrical Necklace" by Candice D.L.Titus |
Our other 2011 Co-Grand Prize Winner is First Place Winner in the Glass & Crystal Category, "Asymmetrical" Necklace by Candice D.L. Titus (Willow Grove, PA). Candice's goal was to create a necklace that would coordinate with an asymmetrical fashion clothing neckline. She wove together gray crystal pearls of various shades and sizes to create the main "stately rope" from which dangling focal chains hang. Candice says of her winning piece that "a key aspect of the design process involved determining how I would attach the chain to the bead woven foundation of the necklace. I devised a stitch that would form a netting around a large crystal bead, allowing the hole of the crystal to be linked to the chain by head pin." As with Patty's design, our judges were impressed with both the unique look and innovative process that Candice used - attributes best appreciated when you can see this shimmering necklace in person!

Inspiration for New-Entrant Winner
Congratulations, also, to Tessa Garcia of Caribbean Mermade (Warwick, NY), our 2011 New-Entrant Drawing Winner! Her name was randomly drawn from all contestants who entered in 2011 for the first time. Tessa makes mosaics, jewelry and other baubles with sea glass that she collects. We handpicked the following winning goodie bag for her:
