Clear Creek Community Council of PTAs

March 2012

 Greetings!

It's election time! The election of our PTA officers is always an exciting time of the year. The nominating committee must post their recommendation for each office days before the election, which is to be conducted at a regular meeting of the membership. Nominations may also be made for each office from the floor during the election process. In the event there is more than on candidate for an office, a ballot vote must be conducted, allowing each candidate an opportunity to speak to the membership prior to the casting of ballots.

The CCCC Officers for 2012-2013 were elected at the March 5th regular meeting and are posted in this newsletter. Congratulations to our Council's newly elected President, Elizabeth  Clemente-Nelson, and  all of the officers for the coming year.

I just returned from  the 103rd Annual Convention and Family Engagement Conference of Texas PTA. There were 801 attendees present at this event. During the three days of workshops and general meeting sessions, the newly elected officers for the 2012-2014 Texas PTA Board were installed. They are: Karen Slay, President; Leslie Boggs, 1st VP; Lisa Holbrook, 2nd VP; Heather Ashwell-Hair, Secretary; Renee Walker, Treasurer; Lois Pearson, Region I VP; Chris Reeder, Region II VP; Belma Juarez, Region III VP; Karen Smith, Region IV VP; Scott Brown, Region V VP and Leah Filzow-Perez, Region VI VP. Congratulations!

I urge all of our local PTA members to attend an annual convention for Texas PTA (February) or Summer Leadership Seminar (SLS) which is held in July. This is an excellent time to network with other PTA units throughout Texas and meet members of local units within our school district and the nearby community. It's the sharing of ideas and the borrowing of successful programs that will help your PTA grow, keep volunteers energized and offer fresh activities and programs to your parents and students.

Of the numerous workshops available to attendees at these two annual events, there are several free presentations that Texas PTA will present at your school. They are: NetSmartz, Profession: Parent ,Road Rules, Stop Bullying, 40 Developmental Assets, Food and Fitness Matter and Party 101: Consequences.

In addition to being wonderful, free programs, three of these qualify as professional development credits for educators. They are: 40 Developmental Assets, Food and Fitness Matter: Healthy Kids, Successful Students and Stop Bullying. For more information on these programs and how you can schedule a presentation on your campus go to txpta.org and reference Ready.Set.Achieve! in the parent resource section of the website.

Have a great Spring!

SPECIAL PURCHASES

What You Need to Know

 Diane Fatora, CCCC President,  president@ccccpta.org

Supporting Document(s):

Donations of Equipment or Money to School

March is a great time to appoint a special purchase committee if one has not already been formed.

  1. The PTA treasurer should be examining each line item in the budget and beginning to move residual funds into a special purchase expense line item.
  2. The committee begins by gathering input from parents, teachers and administration. These suggestions go before the committee for evaluation and follow up, if needed.
  3. The principal should review the list of suggested purchases to comment on the merit of each one and provide insight for the committee.
  4.  It is then up to the committee to prioritize the list and present it to the regular membership for approval. The membership votes on each item separately; never as one list of special purchase requests. This will allow for questions, price caps and tweaking of each suggested, if needed, to meet the approval of the membership.

The most important thing to consider when evaluating the amount of special purchase funds available is to take into account expenses the unit will be obligated for over the summer months and into the first part of the new school year.  Be certain to reserve funds for summer leadership training, invoices for any pre-ordered school supplies and spirit wear that the unit offers for sale in August and September. In addition, your unit's standing rules should specify a minimum amount of money that needs to remain in account in addition to pending invoice commitments.

Program Overview

The One World Challenge is open to all students attending a school with a Local PTA/PTSA that is in good standing with Texas PTA. You should reference your Local PTA/PTSA bylaws to review the requirements for good standing status.

Each year, Texas PTA highlights a current environmental or conservation issue for students to utilize in creating their solution. Student entries will be judged within the following grade divisions:

Primary: Pre-K - 2nd Grade

Intermediate: 3rd Grade - 5th Grade

Middle/Junior: 6th Grade - 8th Grade

Senior: 9th Grade - 12th Grade

Depending upon the challenge each year, solution formats and requirements may vary. Updated program information is available at www.txpta.org/programs.

Student Recognition

The One World Challenge allows for students to be recognized at the Local PTA/PTSA and State PTA levels. State-level judging will occur in April, with program results published prior to the end of the school year. Local PTAs/PTSAs are encouraged to recognize all entries received, and should clearly communicate to the students if their entry is being advanced to the next level of judging.

Honorable Mention recipients at the state level will receive their certificate via mail. Entries receiving an Award of Excellence or an Award of Merit will be recognized at an awards ceremony to be held during the summer.

Local PTA Judging

Local PTAs/PTSAs may advance up to 10% of the total number of entries received within each grade division and format. Entries will be forwarded directly to Texas PTA. Judges are not required to advance an equal percentage within each format. Entries advanced to the state level will not be returned and may be used by Texas PTA or their partners for promotional purposes.

Advancing entries must be received by Texas PTA, no later than 5:00 pm, Thursday, March 29th.

HEALTH & SAFETY

7 Signs That Your Child May Be Being Bullied at School (and What You Can Do About It)

Bullying remains a distressingly prevalent reality in U.S. middle and high schools. The National Youth Violence Prevention Network reports that about 30 percent of students (more than 5.7 million young people) are involved in bullying  -- either bullying other students, being bullied themselves, or both.

The following signs may indicate that your child is being bullied:

1. Sudden change in attitude toward school.
There's a reason that "constant" is rarely (if ever) used to describe the attitudes of teens and adolescents, and as a parent you've surely experienced the speed with which a young person's tastes and preferences can change. But if your child's attitude toward school suddenly and dramatically changes for the worse, this could indicate a problem that warrants further investigation.

2. Unexplained cuts, bruises or other injuries. Kids fall down and run into things (and each other) a lot. For many young people -- especially adolescent boys -- getting through the day is a pinball-like experience in which paddles and bumpers are replaced by friends, walls and floors. But there's a difference between run-of-the-mill roughhousing and abuse. If your child
starts showing up with unaccounted-for bumps and bruises -- and if no explanations are forthcoming -- these could be evidence of bullying.

3. Significant drop in grades. Imagine trying to get through your workday knowing that every 45 minutes or so you were going to have to run a gauntlet of threats, intimidating looks, physical harassment and other types of abuse. It'd be a bit difficult to focus on the task at hand, wouldn't it? Such is the experience of a student who is being bullied. As a not-so-subtle
form of personal terrorism, bullying isn't about five minutes of abuse in the hallway -- it's about establishing an enduring environment of fear, regret and apprehension. And these emotions are unlikely to lead to a solid academic performance.

4. Persistent requests to stay home because of hard-to-prove illnesses such as stomach aches or headaches.
Mental anguish can often manifest as physical discomfort -- stress can lead to headaches and fear can result in very real abdominal pain. When your child claims to be too sick to go to school, this may be the truth -- and it may also be a symptom of abuse-related anxiety. Your child may also claim to have what turns out to be a phantom illness in order to avoid yet another confrontation with a bully or bullies. Whether the claims of pain turn out to be legitimate or counterfeit, the underlying cause needs to be investigated.

5. Changes in eating habits or sleep patterns. As noted above, the effects of bullying don't disappear the moment the abuser is out of sight. If your child is being bullied at school, the pain and fear won't dissipate once the dismissal bell rings. In fact, for many of today's tech-savvy bullies, the end of school may signal just the
startof a long night of cyber-bullying. Trauma can impact eating habits (leading to loss of appetite or food binges as a means of numbing the pain) and can disrupt sleep patterns (resulting in either insomnia or excessive sleeping).

6. Changes in social patterns, activities and friends. Adolescence is a time of change, so not every altered behavior is symptomatic of distress. But if your child has suddenly abandoned old friends, withdrawn from once-treasured activities or lost interest in hobbies that once held great significance, take the time to do a little digging. The friends may be bullying your child, or bullies may be preventing your teen from participating in certain social events, sports or activities. Again, you're not looking only for changes, but for changes that are sudden and unexplainable.

7. Mood swings, angry outbursts or other emotional changes. Yes, these can also be categorized as "typical teen behavior." But if your usually mild-mannered adolescent mysteriously transforms into a walking exposed nerve, this is a sign that something is wrong. Don't ever forget that bullying is a traumatic experience, and people respond to trauma in a variety of ways -- some of which involve the misdirected expression of repressed anger.

What You Can Do

The behaviors and experiences listed above are not definitive proof that your child is being bullied. But they should prompt you to take a closer look at what's going on with your child -- especially if you observe many or all of these signs.

Adolescents and teens who act in the ways described above may be doing so for a number of reasons. They may not like their teacher, they might be struggling with a particular subject or they may have simply forgotten to study for a test and are looking for an excuse to stay home. On the more serious side, though, they may be experimenting with alcohol or other drugs, may be suffering from anxiety or depression, or may be being bullied or otherwise abused.

The experts can educate you about many of these conditions -- but don't forget that when it comes to your child, you are the expert. When you notice out-of-character behaviors, dramatic (and unexplainable) changes or any other events that set off your parental radar, don't dismiss your concerns without further investigation.

Talk to your child, consult with school personnel and, if necessary, make an appointment with your family physician. If bullying is the problem, you need to get involved to end the abuse before any more damage is done.

Kick Butts Day

Are you a parent, teacher, work with youth or have kids in your life?

Then you should know about Kick Butts Day, our annual event where youth across the country stand up, speak out and seize control against Big Tobacco. The 17th annual Kick Butts Day is Wednesday, March 21st.

We want YOU to be involved! Parents, teachers, youth group leaders and public health advocates put on events across the country each year. We have several quick activities that can be put together easily in time for Kick Butts Day on Wednesday, March 21st. Your Kick Butts Day event can engage youth and help prevent kids in your community from becoming Big Tobacco's "replacement smokers." Plus-- who doesn't like a fun, educational activity?

Help teach the kids in your life about the perils of tobacco use and engage them in a cause that you're passionate about, and which affects our lives every day-- whether it's noticing colorful advertisements at a local convenience store or seeing a friend or family member with a tobacco related illness. Prevent the kids in your life from becoming one of the 1,000 youth a day who try their first cigarette by involving them in Kick Butts Day.

CAMPUS in the SPOTLIGHT

Has your PTA Unit accomplished something great at your Campus? Do you think other schools might benefit from this "something"? Are you willing to share your successes?

If you have started a new program, improved an old one, had a wonderful guest speaker, parent and/or student workshop; then we would love to share your ideas with others so that they can try them at their

campus.

To encourage these innovative ideas and to applaud the PTAs and Campuses that allow them to flourish, we continue our program called "Campus in the Spotlight."

All entries will be judged and a winner announced at each CCCC Regular Meeting. The winning entry will be presented at the meeting.

If you have a program you would like to submit for this honor, please click
