September 2011

2011-2012 CCCC of PTAs Executive Board

Greetings!

Welcome!  It's always exciting to begin a new school year and I thank each and everyone of you that has agreed to serve as a volunteer within your PTA unit this year. Students benefit when parents take an active role in school functions. Our PTA activitiesDiane Fatora HS 2011

prove to be an integral part of the school, fam-

ily and community connection.

Clear Creek Community Council of PTAs' Executive Board is comprised of thirty members this year. We are here to train PTA members, foster positive connections between PTA and the campus and be of assistance to our local units as they bring programs to the students as well as the parents.

This fall, the Council will offer training workshops and leadership sessions to local board members. In addition, CCCC executive board members do not hesitate when requested to work with local units that request additional training and mentor sessions.

Feel free to contact me or one of the Council Board members should you have a question or concern regarding your PTA.

President, CCCC of PTAs

Local Units,

Due to changes in ALL local unit bylaws, ALL PTA board members must now take Leadership Orientation Training (LOT). We have made a few changes to the previously published training that will be offered; We will NOT offer Board Basics (since LOT is required for all board members) and since our Parliamentarian classes have been so popular, we have added another class. Please note that the LOT class on September 22nd is filling up quickly and will be closed once capacity has been reached.

Please email all RSVPs and questions to reeneea@hotmail.com or 1stvptraining@ccccpta.org .  I look forward to seeing you at training!

National PTA® Convention: Betsy Landers Installed as National PTA® President

Betsy Landers

Betsy Landers, of Memphis, Tennessee, became National PTA's 52nd President on Sunday, June 12 during a special ceremony at the association's

convention in Orlando.

"I am honored to have the opportunity to expand my commitment to children and public education as the president of an association that makes a real difference in the lives of all parents and children across the country," said Landers.

Representing a long line of visionary leaders since 1897, Landers will work to continue the association's rich legacy of engaging parents, schools, legislators, and community leaders in improving children's health, safety, and educational success.

"As president-elect the last two years, I've worked closely with out-going president Chuck Saylors and I'm committed to working with the national staff, state PTAs and members everywhere to continue taking action for all of our nation's kids," said Landers.

She will lead National PTA's Board of Directors to continue long-term strategies and priorities that benefit families nationwide. They'll continue to integrate PTA's core values with the association's strategic plan to speak for every child with one voice.

A member since 1989, Landers has held several positions from the local, state and national level, including: local PTA president, Tennessee PTA president, and National PTA secretary-treasurer.

As President of Tennessee PTA, Landers led that organization in working with the State Board of Education and several legislators to write what would become the Parent Involvement Act, using the PTA National Standards as a model. Now Tennessee law, the Act mandates that all school districts in the state have a written parent involvement policy.

Landers is married to Ben G. Landers and has three children; Benton, Nicholas, and Mary Frances.

National PTA Due Increase

At the National PTA Annual Convention [in June], delegates passed an increase of the National PTA portion of dues from $1.75 to $2.25.

As this increase passed without a specific implementation date, this increase takes effect immediately.

Now, the total amount that each PTA will collect and remit per member for National PTA ($2.25) and Texas PTA ($2.25) dues is $4.50.  National PTA had not increased dues in 10 years.  The additional funds are targeted for:

  • Launch of an aggressive membership campaign
  • Implementation of an improved data management system
  • Enhancements to programs, such as Reflections, family engagement and healthy lifestyles
  • Training for effective leaders at every level

CCISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)

Healthy, Fit and Ready to Learn! Research shows that healthy children do better in school - from attendance and behavior to academics and overall performance. The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) works with the district to help school communities support good health and academic achievement.

What is SHAC?

SHAC is a school board appointed advisory group of individuals who represent different segments of the community. By law, a majority of the members must be persons who are parents of students enrolled in the district and who are not employed by the district. The CCISD SHAC is made up of parents, community members, students and school staff working together to improve the health of all students and families through coordinated school health programs.

Why do we need SHAC?

  • It's Texas Law
  • Healthy children learn better
