Elizabeth Clemente-NelsonLegislative Update

&

Request from

CCISD Superintendent

Dr. Greg Smith

Elizabeth Clemente-Nelson,  CCCC 4th VP Legislation, provided  the CCCC  an overview of what was to take place during the February 3rd Texas PTA Rally at the Capitol in Austin.  At the heart of this is  Public Education and funding at the state level.

CCISD has taken a hands on approach and  have prepared an impact statement of proposed state cuts to public education. They are reaching out to the community for ideas on how the district can manage the impact it will have on their budget.

Do you have a good idea on how to decrease the CCISD budget?

Dr.  Smith is requesting your ideas!!  Please send them to:

4thVPLegislation@ccccpta.org

 Valentines Day

Greetings!   Diane Fatora

Valentine's Day is upon us and spring break will soon be here. For PTAs this signals looking ahead to the election of next year's officers, annual events and allocating surplus funds for special purchases or projects.

Special purchase committees are formed to address ways that your PTA may contribute to the needs of the school and student enrichment programs or materials. The committee will gather input and meet to consider each request. Keep in mind that PTA advocates for the children, all children so it's great to look at programs and educational enrichment suggestions as this aligns with the purpose of PTA and our mission statement.  As a non-profit organization, PTA should never address requests of personal benefit.

Most importantly, each and every item or project that the committee recommends must go before the general membership for a vote. Not as a slate of projects or purchases but each item independently. This will allow the membership to vote down a proposed request or amend an item to change the quantity requested or adjust the expense allowed. As always, your council board is always available to assist.

Diane

"TOGETHER WE CAN"

REFLECTIONS Winners & Reception

March 8--4:30-7:00pm

Tad Akers Event Facility

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED THIS YEAR IN THE REFLECTONS PROGRAM!

The CCCC received 223 entries this year for the PTA Reflections program!  The theme this year was "Together We Can."  Students could submit entries in one or more of six different arts categories.  Entries are judged at the local school level, and may advance up through the council level, state level, and eventually the national level.

The 223 entries that CCCC received were the top scoring 20% of entries from 27 of CCISD's schools.  After judging at the CCCC level, the top 10% of the 223 entries were sent on to the state level.  This included 35 entries across all of the categories and grade divisions.  Congratulations to all of the students who submitted an entry that made it to the Council level, and to the 35 that continued on to the state level.  Results from judging at the state level will be available in late March.

All of the 223 entries that were judged at the Council level will be displayed for viewing at the Reflections Reception on Tuesday, March 8 from 4:30pm until 7:00pm.  The Reception will be held at the Tad Akers Event Facility located 218 Clear Creek Ave, in League City.

Officer and Chairman Training

May 19--8:30a.m.

Spring Officer and Chairman Training is scheduled for May 19 at University Baptist Church.  Ongoing training is key to any successful organization no matter how long you've been involved.  PTA also requires all newly elected officers to complete Leadership Orientation Training (LOT) no later than October 15 .

The CCCC Spring Training is a great opportunity for all those current and new incoming board members to gain first hand knowledge to guide them in their positions.  For a complete list of training available click here.

FACILITATING MOTIONS

Helpful Hints

More Helpful Tips from your

CCCC Training and Materials Team (TMT) Resources

President - Managing motions can get messy - use these techniques to help you stay on track:

  • Ask the maker of the motion to write the motion down and hand you that motion form after it has been read.
  • Or, ask the maker of the motion to repeat the motion slowly, so the secretary can record it.
  • If you can't remember the exact wording of the motion, ask the secretary to read the motion back from the minutes.
  • It is easy to lose your train of thought, with respect to where you are in the motion process.  Call on the parliamentarian, when needed, to tell you the current status.

Vice President - Be prepared to fill in "missing parts" of motions, such as a second for a motion, or a motion itself.  Often times, people will start a discussion without following the proper procedure of making a motion first.  You can help everyone out, especially the president, by making a motion for them.  Anyone can make a motion; it doesn't have to be the person who started the topic.

Secretary - Be prepared to read the motion back from the minutes.  Hand out motion forms to encourage people to write their motions down first.  If the maker of the motion didn't write the motion down, ask the president to have them repeat it (or speak more slowly) so you can record it exactly the way they say it.

Treasurer - If you make a motion to amend the budget that came from a Budget Committee meeting, no second is required - because it came as a recommendation from a committee.

Parliamentarian - Keep track of the status of the motions on the floor, because if the president loses track, you may be called upon to report where the motions stand.  The hierarchy can get complicated; it's possible to have many motions open at once, for example: a main motion, an amendment to that main motion, a motion to call for the previous question, and a point of order could all be active at the same time.

Member - Write your motion down before reading it.  Read it exactly the way you wrote it.  You will be surprised how many things will come to mind that, if missing, would require an amendment to fix them.  Afterward, hand that piece of paper to the president.
