Meeting a Huge Success

The CCCC held a meeting for all Presidents & Treasurers on January 12. A lot of great information was exchanged.  If you were unable to attend and/or are interested in obtaining copies of the materials covered by CCCC Treasurer, Rich Leeney, you can do so by clicking on "handouts."

EIN Verification Form Due

For your PTA to be covered by the Texas PTA group exemption, Texas PTA must submit current information on your behalf to the IRS annually.

This form must be completed and returned by January 31, 2011

Electing a Nominating Committee

CCCC Training and Materials Team (TMT) Resources

Uncle Sam HatIf you have not already elected a Nominating Committee you need to do so at the general membership meeting or a special meeting prior to the general membership meeting where your Executive Officers are elected for the following year.  Below are a few helpful hints from the CCCC Training and Materials Team .

President - Nominating Committees are always elected, but as you know, it can be difficult to find PTA members to serve on the Nominating Committee.  You may not appoint people to the committee, but you may plan ahead.  Ahead of the general membership meeting where the nominating committee will be elected by the general members, you may plant the "seeds of inspiration" to PTA members that would make good committee members.  That way they will be prepared to nominate themselves (or have a friend do it).  If you get more nominees than spots, congratulations!  Your PTA is very involved.  If that is the case, you will want to take a ballot vote, and the election of the Nominating Committee members is determined by plurality.

Vice President - Can you serve in the Nominating Committee, if you want to be considered for president next year? Yes, any member of your PTA, except the president, may serve on the Nominating Committee, if elected to it.

Secretary - Officers are allowed to serve two consecutive 1-year terms.  If you are interested in the second 1-year term, let the Nominating Committee know you are interested in being considered for the Slate of Officers. The Nominating Committee might select someone else, in which case you will decide if you want to run from the floor or not.

Treasurer - It is often difficult for the Nominating Committee to locate a qualified person for treasurer. Because you know the skills involved in being a treasurer, be on the lookout for a person you could suggest to the Nominating Committee.  The Nominating Committee may select someone else, but at least that gives them options.  If the Nominating Committee selects someone else, you can consider nominating your candidate from the floor.

Parliamentarian - Look up the information about the Nominating Committee in your bylaws.  It is handy to read this section to the members at the general membership meeting where the election of the Nominating Committee will occur.  Ask the president if this can be added to the agenda, and volunteer to read it.

Member - If you are knowledgeable about the skills of the members in your PTA, seriously consider running for election to the Nominating Committee.  Or, if you are interested in being an officer, tell the Nominating Committee that you are interested in being considered for an officer position.

Nominating Committee Members - Your job is to find qualified people for the next school year to be your officers (Only the elected officers, such as president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.  Appointed officers, such as the historian and the parliamentarian, are not handled by the Nominating Committee.)  When the Chairman of the Nominating Committee presents the Slate of Officers at the election meeting, it should be completely filled out with the best qualified people in your PTA.  Remember to consider people who are not yet members - they will need to become members, however, after they are elected.

Litter: From the City to the Sea

"Simple behaviors can impact not only our local, but our global environment.  Litter is a consequence of simple behaviors that result in mishandled trash, whether thoughtless or deliberate.  Litter impacts the area where it originates, but can also travel throughout the environment when rain washes debris into streams and storm drains.  One piece of litter left on a roadside can therefore impact more than just that immediate area, but can travel long distances to impact multiple ecosystems including rivers, lakes, wetlands and eventually our oceans.

It is not only coastal communities who are responsible for the health of our oceans, but inland communities as well.  Our behaviors really do have far reaching impacts, so make your impact positive!  Every individual has the ability to reduce litter locally, which can impact our entire environment.

Students are invited to step up to the One World Challenge, and create a solution to address the impact of litter on our environment." (Texas PTA)
