King County Heart Attack Response Rate One of World's Best
An August 31 report by King County Executive Dow Constantine praises King County Emergency Medical Services (EMS)/ Medic One, of which Mercer Island Fire Department (MIFD) is a member, for providing among the world's best cardiac survival rate.
Residents in most other parts of the nation have a 10% survival rate from heart attack. However in King County, the chance of survival climes dramatically to 52% thanks to in part to the fast 7.5 minute average response time of MIFD and other emergency responders county-wide.
The King County EMS/Medic One system is managed by the Emergency Medical Services Division of Public Health -- Seattle and King County. According to the press release, the system relies on a close partnership of thousands of professionals with fire departments, paramedic agencies, EMS dispatch centers, and hospitals to provide emergency care and save lives.
"I feel safer knowing that the system for response to heart attack events in King County is so effective, and I would hope other Islanders feel the same way," says City Manager Rich Conrad.
The EMS 2012 Annual Report is available at www.kingcounty.gov/health/ems.
Information about the Mercer Island Fire Department can be found on their City webpage.

City Becomes EPA Green Power Partner
|
Mercer Island Now an a Green Power Partner
|
The City has become a member of the Green Power Partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Membership in this free, voluntary program provides the City assistance with procuring electricity generated from renewable, "green" resources. Green energy purchases help reduce the risk of climate change and minimize environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity use. Mercer Island joins more than 1,300 Partner organizations in the program including Fortune 500 companies, colleges and universities, and other local and state governments.
Clean energy is generated from such renewable resources as wind, solar, geothermal, low-impact biomass, and low-impact hydro.
According to the Green Power Partnership website, purchasing green power helps fuel the development of new, domestic renewable energy sources. Additional benefits of the partnership include formal recognition that the City's green power use meets nationally accepted standards. The partnership also allows the City access to EPA communications tools and resources.
Additional information about the partnership, as well as educational information on green issues, science/technology, and laws/regulations, is available on the EPA website.

Community Supplies Backpacks for Kids It is back-to-school time for Island families and, as parents are aware, all students need to come prepared with a backpack and a wide array of school supplies. However, for some Island families, this expense creates a significant hardship. To lend a hand, Mercer Island Youth and Family Services (MIYFS) offers the Back to School Backpack Program which

Back to School Backpack Program Lends a Hand | supplies qualified students with a backpack and all the necessary supplies to begin the school year fully prepared.
Although MIYFS coordinates this program, the backpacks and supplies themselves were donated by the Aljoya retirement community (for the fourth consecutive year). In a similar act of giving, girls and moms from the local chapter of the National Charity League donated time to fill each backpack with school-specific supplies--a significant undertaking given the extent and diversity of items required.
MIYFS would like to extend its 'thanks' to Aljoya and the NCL for yet another year of generous giving. In all, 60 backpacks filled with supplies made going back to school a little easier for some Island kids and families.
"It is great to see the community come together like this to support kids having a good start to the school year with needed school supplies," says MIYFS Emergency Assistance Coordinator, Cheryl Manriquez.
