 Self Massage for Cramps/PMS

This is the third in Sage's series on scientifically proven ways to relieve menstrual cramps and PMS.  The first article discussed yoga postures; the second showed effective shiatsu points to use along with heat.  In this article, we'll give you some tips for abdominal massage.

Abdominal massage, even 5 minutes a day
starting about 4 days
before your period,
has been proven to relieve cramps.

A couple of things before we start:

  • It works best if you do it every month consistently as the results are known to be cumulative
  • It will take about 3-4 months to see results.
  • Finally, if you have the time, of course, you can come in for a full PMS/Menstrual Cramps session at Sage.  The session includes a professional abdominal massage with a specially formulated anti-cramping aromatherapy formula plus Shiatsu, Swedish massage, heating pads and hot stones.

In the meantime, here's what you can do at home to help yourself:

The Goal:

Hormones are rushing to the uterus causing engorgement, cramping and that unbearably "full" feeling.  Your goal is to reduce the pelvic congestion and cramping with targeted massage.

AMTA: Massage Therapy May Benefit Newborns

baby massage BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Research has shown that neonatal handling affects the neurochemical brain development of certain regions in the brain that regulate the response to stress.

The benefits of massage therapy for pre-term infants have been well documented in several studies; some of the cited research involves small sample sizes. Taken together, however, the total research cited is supportive.

These benefits include the following:

  • Massage is a cost-effective therapy for pre-term infants.
  • Pre-term infants gained more weight with just five days of massage.
  • Massage therapy by mothers in the perinatal period serves as a strong time cue, enhancing coordination of the developing circadian system with environmental cues.
  • Over the 6-week period, the massage therapy infants gained more weight, showed greater improvement on emotionality, sociability, and soothability temperament dimensions and had greater decreases in urinary stress catecholamines/hormones (norepinephrine, epinephrine, cortisol).
  • Infants receiving massage showed fewer sleep delay behaviors and had a shorter latency to sleep onset by the end of the study
  • Massage may have a stress reducing effect on pre-term infants in the NICU.
  • Reduction of illness and diarrheal episodes
  • Improve quality of sleep and reduce sleep-disordered breathing in low birth weight babies.

Massage Therapy can be a Valuable
Component of a Wellness Program

Massage has been shown to increase range of motion and flexibility as well as to improve measures of anxiety, depression, vitality, and perceived stress. It can also increase feelings of wellness, calm, relaxation, and a sense of belonging.

In a study of the effect of massage therapy on patients receiving Bone Marrow Transplants (BMT) it was concluded that those who received massage therapy had a better quality of life.  These patients rested more easily, had less depression and anxiety and were more able to communicate with loved ones during this crucial treatment.
  • Massage helps overcome the feelings of fatigue.
  • Massage has positive side-effects in addition to those that
    affect the musculoskeletal system.
  • Massage coupled with aromatherapy and music significantly reduced
    emergency room nurses' anxiety levels.
  • Adolescents had an increased sense of well-being after receiving massage.
  • Massage increases a sense of well-being and decreases stress in older adults.
  • Massage reduces nausea in chemotherapy patients.
  • Caregiver[s] reported an improvement in physical and emotional
    states after chair massage.
  • Massage in combination with mental training (in a stress management program) has a positive effect on women's health.

  A Woman's Sleep Is Just Different From A Man's
sleep

Starting at birth, females have more slow-wave sleep than males.
Slow-wave sleep, which occurs during stage 3 and 4 sleep,

is the deepest, most refreshing, wake-up-and-feel-great sleep.

Girls tend to wake up during the night less frequently than boys.

Women continue to have significant deep sleep well into their 30s
while men's deep sleep begins to decline in their 20s.

Women's sleep systems appear to age more slowly than men's.
