Massage for
Menstrual Cramps
Ladies, we are all female here at Sage and, believe me when I tell you, we feel your pain. Cramps, backache, tension headache and just plain get-out-of-my-way crabbiness.
We therapists have been working on each other to develop a fabulous massage session specifically for menstrual cramps to make you feel better.
The session includes: a moist heat heating pad, hot stones, a special aromatherapy anti-cramping formula to go on the belly, shiatsu points, and lots of luscious swedish and deep tissue massage. The relief is amazing!
Once the whole staff is trained, this session will be offered to the public... hopefully starting in August.
A Recent Medical Study: As many as 93 percent of women experience menstrual cramps, and up to 26 percent of women experience severe pain, some studies suggest. Research from a South Korean school of nursing shows that massaging an aromatherapy blend of lavender, clary sage and rose essential oils onto the abdomen just before and during a woman's menstrual period provides relief from cramps.
The full research report of "Aromatherapy Massage Relieves Menstrual Cramps," ran in the print edition of MASSAGE Magazine's April 2007 issue.

Goodness!
Here's to a happy sweet tooth
OK, so you can't have your sweet tooth pulled. At times though you may wish you could. Why not try to tame those sugary cravings with a healthful, satisfying approach? Two Key Strategies - Rely on nature's candy: think fresh ripe fruit which can be very sweet
- Limit portion sizes- so you're not getting too much of a good thing
Need Ideas? - Enjoy a Juicecicle. Freeze unsweetened 100% juice or pureed fruit into ice pop molds. Add popsicle sticks and freeze.
- Fix a Frozen Smoothie. Blend a small container of low-fat yogart with fresh or frozen fruit and some ice cubes. Blend until smooth.
- Build Fruit Kebobs. Use peach, pineapple, kiwi, banana, apples and grapes for example. Skewer the cut fruit on wooden skewers. Brush with lemon juice and vanilla glaze so the fruit won't brown.
- Enjoy a cone. Fill a waffle cone with cut fruit including grapes, berries, bananas, apples, pears, kiwi, and melon. Top with a little low-fat yogurt mixed with a drop or two of vanilla. OR drizzle with a bit of melted chocolate. Go easy on the chocolate if you want to keep it guilt free.
Lemon Balm - Spearmint Iced Tea Cool and Refreshing, & Guilt FREE 4 or 5 Springs of fresh Lemon Balm 1 Sprig of fresh Spearmint (NOT Peppermint) 4 Cups Boiling Water 10+ drops Liquid Stevia (sweeten to taste, go easy, you can always add more. One drop is very sweet. See below) Directions:
Pour the hot water over the mint and lemon balm. Add the Stevia*. Steep until cool Pour over ice and enjoy. Need Sweet AND Sugar FREE without any of those nasty chemicals? Try Stevia*.
Stevia Rebaudiana is an herb in the Chrysanthemum family which grows wild as a small shrub in parts of Paraguay and Brazil. The glycosides in its leaves, including up to 10% Stevioside, account for its incredible sweetness, making it unique among the nearly 300 species of Stevia plants. There are indications that Stevia (or Ca-he-he) has been used to sweeten a native beverage called mate since Pre-Columbian times. However, a Natural Scientist names Antonio Bertoni first recorded its usage by native tribes in 1887. Stevia is much sweeter than sugar and has none of sugar's unhealthy drawbacks. Look for it in your local health food store. |

What can I do to RELAX when the Spa is Closed?

We hope you'll think of us here at Sage Spa when you want a great massage, but when massage isn't an option we hope you'll think about Ma Rollers! We love our Ma Rollers here at the spa, especially when the staff goes home, or when we are on the road away from home. You will too!
"The Ma Roller is a self massage tool that gently stretches the paraspinal muscles like a good deep tissue massage. It also stimulates the lines of energy associated with major acupressure points, opening your chi channels, allow your energy to flow freely."
"The MA Roller is a tool for healing and awareness, gleaned from the teachings of ancient China. It was invented in 1970 by a Chinese practitioner of acupuncture, who is also a student of yoga. The MA Roller gives a gentle stretch to the spine, and a deep massage to the antigravity muscles on the back, along lines of energy known to the science of acupuncture."
Do Less Not More & Remember to Breathe Easy to Use: The Ma Roller is easy to use. We recommend starting your first session on a bed or couch, where there is some soft give under the Ma Roller, because lying on a soft surface means that the roller doesn't press as hard into your back. If you work on a floor, the roller presses up with it's full force into those knots. So start on the bed, later after you get the hang of it you can try it using the Ma Roller on the floor for those tough problem areas. To Begin: Start at your upper back, and lie down with your spine centered over groove in the ma Roller, so that the roller presses into the flesh either side of the spine and NOT into your spine. The idea is to try to do less not more. Like back carefully, and feel the raised areas of the roller pressing into the flesh on either side of the spine. Does it hurt? Go easy, Lie still and breathe. Let your body melt into the roller. The idea is not to roll your body up and down over the roller, instead, work the roller slowly inch by inch down your spine toward your butt, working one spot at a time. Rest and breathe at each spot until the tension melts away. Allow about 30-45 minutes to work the entire length of your spine. As your tension fades, you will notice your body melting down around the roller. You'll soon feel very relaxed. The tenderness that you experience is a result of those tight muscles in your back responding to the pressure of the Ma Roller, much in the same way you might feel some tenderness when a massage therapist digs deeply into those stubborn knots. As long as the tenderness is not a result of injury, your muscles will let go, and you will soon feel better. TIP: Are you a wreck, extremely tense and your back hurts like crazy when using the Ma Roller? Lying on a soft surface? That will help. If you still feel too much pain lying on the roller, gently ease yourself up off the roller a few inches with your hands under your back or with a pillow until you can continue. Now relax and breathe. As the tension slowly dissolves your body will begin to melt around the roller along with the pain and the tension. Feel Better! A few things to keep in mind: - The MA Roller should not be used when there is spinal injury, or even suspicion of it.
- The MA Roller should not be used during pregnancy
- The MA Roller should not be used for longer than a few seconds on the head and neck by lying on it, because the head and neck are delicate structures.
- One should not fall asleep on the MA Roller. (which is easier to do than you may think, once you start relaxing)

Spa Etiquette 101
Sexual harassment is not a topic many spas want to discuss for obvious reasons- it's not exactly great for business; but given the recent Weiner, Strauss-Kahn, and Schwarzenegger sex scandals, we thought this might be a good time to briefly speak to the issue of inappropriate sexual behavior in spas. When it comes to legitimate spas, and licensed massage therapists, sexual harassment is a small but serious problem, compounded by the fact that so many "massage parlors" and spas serve as fronts for prostitution. Every worker, whether it be a massage therapist or chamber maid, wants to know that they are safe while they are at their job. In the spa, we do our best to screen starting with the initial phone call.
TIP-OFFS: Inquiries for "Happy Endings", or "Full Body" massage are often tip offs, as is refusing to leave a verifiable phone number or credit card. For the rare few that manage to actually slip past and get an appointment, experienced therapists often talk about a bad vibe from the very moment the client walks in the door. JUDGEMENT CALL: So flags go up. What do we do? When confronted with unwanted behavior, the therapist has to make a judgement call. Is this unwanted behavior purely accidental: embarrassing but not sexually threatening ie. an innocently misplaced towel/sheet or a new client unfamiliar with spa etiquette or is this truly inappropriate behavior. Whenever "No" fails to get the desired result, the therapists terminates the massage, demands that the client leave immediately, exits the room, and contacts management. Police and lawyers are always options. There are tough laws against sexual harassment. The New York Commission on Human Rights is clear about the issue:
Sexual harassment is a form of gender-based discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Unwelcome verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitutes unlawful sexual harassment when: · Granting sexual favors is used as the basis for employment decisions or as a requirement to keep your job · Such conduct unreasonably interferes with job performance, or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment For many businesses, preventing sexual harassment, and defending employees from sexual harassment charges, have become key goals of legal decision-making. Forms of harassment relationships include: · The harasser can be anyone, such as a client, a co-worker, a parent or legal guardian, a teacher or professor, a student, a friend, or a stranger. · The victim does not have to be the person directly harassed but can be anyone who finds the behavior offensive and is affected by it. · Adverse affects on the target are common · The victim can be any gender. The harasser can be any gender. · The harasser does not have to be of the opposite sex. · The harasser may be completely unaware that his or her behavior is offensive or constitutes sexual harassment or may be completely unaware that his or her actions could be unlawful. If you believe you are a victim of sexual harassment, you should clearly communicate to the harasser that the conduct is unwelcome. You should also immediately inform a manager or the equal employment opportunity officer. Y ou may also want to file a sexual harassment claim, or contact a sexual harassment attorney to file a lawsuit. _________
Sage Spa is dedicated to providing a safe, non-threatening workplace for our staff, including one free of sexual harassment. Violators will be held accountable, and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
