Family Directory Online
Parent Directory
The first edition of the Family Directory has been posted online at the school's website. It is in the password protected area. We will send a separate email to all of our current families and staff reconfirming your user names and passwords.

When you log in to the password protected Parent area of the school website, and click on the Family Directory, you will find links to 3 different sizes: one for your computer, an IPAD, or a smart phone. Each can be downloaded as a PDF.

The school's enrollment is continuing to grow. We currently have 95 students, and several more are in the admission process. We expect that the Directory will be updated several times over the year as new families join the school.

Microeconomics:
Upper School Organize Small Businesses

Upper School students are learning about micro-economics and entrepreneurship in a first-hand fashion by planning, opening, and running their own businesses!

Four business ventures are currently in the works: a NewGate Used Bookstore, a Student Art Gallery, a Babysitting Service, and the publishing of a NewGate Family Cookbook.

The GRAND OPENINGS for these four business will be during Student Demonstration Night on October 13th, so please stop by and visit us in the Angelou Room.

Students are currently working in the start-up phases of these businesses and topics such as supply and demand, marketing, advertising, pricing, and budgeting are being addressed on a daily basis.  Business plans, feasibility studies, and projected budgets are being written, as well as the following informational material:

THE BOOKSTORE:

A small group of 7th and 8th graders in the First Cycle of Secondary are opening a small used bookstore in the Angelou Room!  We will be selling books for all ages at an extraordinarily low price, but for this to happen we need books donated!  Book donations are greatly needed and appreciated.  In fact, if you donate 10 books, you will be able to take one other book free!  We will also be accepting CDs and DVDs.  All of your old books, for all ages, that you have laying around could be enjoyed by other people.  All profit will be used to help fund First Cycle field trips.  Our hours will be before school at dropoff until 8:30, and after school on Tuesdays until 4:45.  So we need many, many book donations if our trip is going to work out!  If you have questions, comments or concerns, email us at  newgatebookstore@aol.com
and we will answer as soon as possible!

THE ART STORE:

We are opening an art store which will feature original artwork from NewGate students!  We will be open in conjunction with the Used Book Store and we will also be displaying artwork with informational cards around campus.  So if you are unable to stop by our store, you can still purchase artwork from around the school.  Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have, donate art supplies, or just appreciate the work of our talented NewGate students! Email us at artstore@newgate.edu

BABYSITTING:

Secondary students at NewGate School are proposing a babysitting business to help raise money for the First Cycle research trip. This service will be available for children of any age, from babies through elementary. The babysitters are middle schoolers who are certified with CPR and babysitter training. We will be scheduling "Parent's Night Out" as well as other opportunities for you to use this service.  We are looking forward to taking care of your kids! For more information, please contact us at Babysitting@newgate.edu or 941-455-7451.
Sincerely,

Lori Gomez, Harley Rouwhorst,  Brelyn Casper, and Patrick Wheeler

NEWGATE COOKBOOK:

NewGate First Cycle students are making a cookbook to raise money for the class research trip.  NewGate families can contribute recipes to the book, which will be available before the holidays.  For more information please contact Cookbook@newgate.edu

September Community Meeting

Survey on the Extended School Year

Last February, when we were preparing for re-enrollment, the Board and the Administration discussed many issues pertaining to the 2011-2012 school year. We looked at what NewGate had traditionally done and what the Field School had intended to do. One of our goals for the Field School was to become a more family-friendly school for those who needed longer hours, care during school breaks and the summer. As educators, we also recognized the benefits of a somewhat longer school year. Our thought was that adding an extra 3 weeks to the school year would be a valued-added enhancement.

The decision to extend the school year was announced several times, but, in the press of moving to Ashton and managing the process of transition, we did not focus together on this particular question as parents and educators. A fairly significant number of families urged us to reconsider. The issue has been discussed at the last two community meetings, and a few weeks ago we posted an online survey. So far, 37 families and members of the faculty have responded, with opinions more or less evenly divided on their thoughts for both this year and the future. We are anxious to hear from everyone in the school community. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to ...

Dear Parents, Teachers, and Students,

Thank you so much for your help so far with Box Tops.

I would love to remind you that we have two Box Top donation boxes. One in the Picasso

I am delighted to tell you that we have made about $50 so far.

You can check the progress of our Box Top fundraising at www.btfe.com, the website
runs 30-45 days behind so don't be discouraged if our number is not up to date.
