The NewGate School

Please Share Your Thoughts on The

10 Month School Year

Greetings!

This is a reminder about the short survey about the 10 month school year that we opened on Monday.

We decided to conduct this poll after several students and parents asked about the lengthened school year - why do we need a longer school year, who decided to extend the year, when was it announced to the community?

Last February, when we were preparing for re-enrollment, the Board and the Administration discussed many issues pertaining to the 2011-2012 school year. We looked at what NewGate had traditionally done and what the Field School had intended to do. One of the goals for the Field School was to become a more family friendly school for those who needed longer hours, care during school breaks and the summer. As educators, we also recognized the benefits of a somewhat longer school year. Our thought was that adding an extra 3 weeks to the school year would be a valued-added enhancement.

The decision to extend the school year was announced several times in letters and at meetings, but this was a case where, in the press of moving to Ashton and managing the process of transition, we did not focus together on this particular question.

Thus far, 8 families have responded. Thus far, we have noticed both enthusiastic support from some and a wish to preserve the 3 month summer from others. Our goal is to get a better sense of how the community feels, both for planning how to use the extra weeks this year, and in looking ahead to the following school year.

If you have not already done so, we invite you to share your thoughts in the poll that follows. This will also be one of the items on the agenda at tonight's Community Meeting.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know you thoughts. We value your feedback.

Sincerely,
