Greetings!
Race To Nowhere is an acclaimed documentary that explores the often ignored dark side of America's over-emphasis on highly competitive educational programs that stress test scores and hours of homework, over a calmer, more thoughtful approach to deep learning. The film address topics that many parents find thought-provoking and disturbing. Race To Nowhere feature the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren't developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what's best for their kids, Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired. The film's primary goal is to bring to life the reality behind the very widely held system of beliefs that has led so many schools to pursue a path that has emphasized memorization over deep and lasting learning, superficial factual knowledge over understanding and a sense of the interconnections among fields of knowledge. Race To Nowhere explores both the experiences common to most families today and the serious social, emotional, and political implications for our country. Race To Nowhere is igniting a national conversation about the pressures faced by American school children and their teachers in a system and culture obsessed with the illusion of achievement, competition and the pressure to perform. When pressure on students to out-perform gets out of control, students, parents, and teachers easily lose sight of the real purpose of a true education, high school and college students often end up burned out, disappointed, and deeply in debt with student loans. Montessori schools around the world demonstrate every day that children are capable of amazing things. We recognize that children come to us with a wide-range of talents and interests, and we attempt to respond to each as a unique individual. We challenge the idea that education should be a race. We see it as a journey of discovery and growth. Montessori is built on a culture of partnership and trust between students and teachers, hands-on learning experience, and the exploration of complex ideas. We want students to think deeply and grow as human beings. __________ This will be an intimate screening and discussion, limited to 30 attendees. We are requesting a contribution to the school of at least $15 per attendee to help defray the cost of exhibiting the film. We will also be showing Race to Nowhere on Monday, September 26 from 9:00 to 11:00am (limited to 15 attendees). Look for additional screenings and discussions throughout the school year. This event is open to families and friends of NewGate School and The Montessori Foundation.
