You may have never made this connection, but your habits play a large role in forming your character. For instance, if you're never on time, you're disorganized, your work product is sloppy, you're impatient and sometimes rude, these all are actually habits, but ultimately shape you to a large degree.
Something has always perplexed me, how come everything that's easy seems to be bad for you? I love you God, but to be perfectly honest, sometimes I wish you would have designed somethings in reverse. Think about it. How great would it be, if sitting on the couch eating wings and drinking beer produced the same results as working out (I'd be in the best shape of my life!)? Or spending money you don't have was a way to financial freedom (this unfortunately has become the financial program for many), or a big ole' piece of pie was health food? I think life would be so much easier! But, it is what it is, so acceptance of that is a major step towards a better life.
I read once that "Bad habits are easy to develop, but difficult to live with". I never looked at it that way but it makes so much sense. It's really easy to run up a charge on a credit card, but the arrival of the bill also brings with it stress, pressure and guilt. Among the most difficult today is developing good eating habits. You can't turn around without instant access to oversized portions of unhealthy food and drink. Almost everybody I know is on a diet! It's really easy to cheat, but rough to live with. I'd rather do a 12 ounce curl (that happened to be the weight of a beer for those of you not familiar) then a push-up any day of the week.
Not only do our bad habits creep into our character, but they hold us back. Analyze some of the things that are challenging you right now. Chances are that there is a connection between your unwanted results, and your habits.
Here's the good news! Because the Law of Polarity decrees that everything has an opposite, which means that if something's really bad, it's also really good. You just need to look for the good. And here it is...these are just bad habits, and habits can be changed!
Now I understand that good habits are difficult to develop. They require work, discipline, enduring some pain and sacrifice. But after a while, good habits, just like bad habits, become second nature. But studies have shown that you can change habitual behavior in about six weeks. Some claim this can be done in as little as twenty-one days! Also, and this is important, replacinga bad habit with a good habit, verses breaking a bad habit, should be your goal.
Take smoking for example, instead of replacing a bad habit for a good habit, many replace it with another bad habit; overeating. Try something like walking as an alternative.
Lastly, and this is important to remind yourself, good habits are easy to live with, and that is reason enough to start right now!
So this week, make a commitment to yourself to replace a bad habit with a good one. I can assure you, within as little as six weeks, you'll be glad you did.
Make it your best week....Joe
