This week, everyone's attention will be on the Super Bowl aka the "Big Game". I find it both ironic and interesting that most people give no thought whatsoever to how the Championship game is labeled. Every team started in the exact same place. Each had the same opportunity. But only two teams made it to the "Big Game". Maybe there are a couple lessons here.
First, I wonder if that was because although the Super Bowl was their destination, these teams recognized early on the importance of the journey. I don't really think they started the season, or each game with an attitude that "how we play this week isn't important". Instead, I think they clearly understood that every game was a "Big Game" in order to advance them in the direction of their goal.
Have you ever thought about the fact that the line at the beginning of the end zone is referred to as the Goal line? Or that the kicker aims between the Goal post?
Second, my sense is that the two remaining teams understood that they in fact were a "team"; that in order to win, it would require the efforts of every team member. As the saying goes, there's no "I" in TEAM. I don't care how great an individual is, there is always a team surrounding their success.
This is a great analogy of your life. Since the Quarterback is the leader of the team, consider that you are the quarterback of your like. To get from where you are, to where you want to be, you need certain things. A winner's attitude, a purpose, clear vision and goal, and a deep understanding of the important role your team plays.
First-Attitude. The right attitude; a winner's attitude. You must start each week like it's the biggest game of your life. Last week is behind you. A critical part of a Pro's success is that they never dwell on the past. What you do this week will affect the big picture, give it your all. It matters. By the way, being a pro is acting like one. Leave everyone you deal with the impression that they just dealt with a professional.
Second-Your Vision and Goal. You must have a crystal clear vision of where you are going otherwise you'll end up somewhere else. Your goals are the things you do to fulfill your purpose and vision. If you're not trying to be the Super Bowl Champ everyday, you should evaluate why you're doing what you're doing. However, once you understand this, you'll never work another day in your like.
Third-Your team. Don't underestimate or ignore the importance your team plays in your success. Your environment shapes you. Not just the physical space, but all that surrounds you're your company, office, support staff, network of vendors, and the people you choose to hang around. All these make up your team. Without the best team, you're not going to win.
If you aren't getting what you need in terms of support, training, guidance and leadership...change teams. Don't just sit on the beach of Life.
So this week, get out your game book, establish a game plan and have a huddle with your team.
Then, go out there and try and win the trophy everyday...I'll be looking for you on ESPN.
Make it your best week, Joe
