My Grandpa, Miller Siegel is 95 years old and still works at the family jewelry store. Here are some great lessons I learned from my Grandpa that I thought we could all

benefit from....

GRANDPA LESSON #1

USE HUMOR!

A customer would ask Miller, "How much to replace this tiny diamond?" Miller would answer, "$50..... $25 for the diamond, and $25 for the diamond I LOSE replacing your diamond!"

My Grandpa told me this joke. A jeweler goes into a diamond dealers office and sees piles and piles of diamonds. "Wow, you have SO many diamonds! You must be a great salesman." "Not really", replies the diamond dealer. "But the guy who sells TO me, NOW THERE is a great salesman!"

Growing up in the jewelry store I would ask my grandpa "Hey Grandpa what color grade is this diamond?" And he would answer, "Ahh, the color is some where between the colors S and H

and I  T "

GRANDPA LESSON #2
PEOPLE LOVE STORIES

Stories add romance. We sell romance! My Grandpa's stories about gems he bought, sold, and treasured added value to each piece of jewelry he sold.

People LOVE a story. That's why brands sell. Sell your story, not just your jewelry. Your story could be your events or your fun decor. The BETTER you deliver your STORY, the better your customer feels about their purchase, and the less price matters.

My dad had the terrific idea to have a story attached to EACH and EVERY piece of jewelry in the case! When the staff would show a piece of jewelry, there would already be a story written up to help romance the item.

GRANDPA LESSON #3
DON'T FAKE DISCOUNT

Siegel Jewelers was started in 1889 and in 123 years they never marked an item up to mark it down. My grandpa believes that the problem with discounts is they never end. Once you train people to buy on sale they ONLY buy during sales. Then you are forced to have sale after sale. Miller and my dad also believe that discounts are not fair because one customer will get a different price than another customer. It is not easy, but you CAN convince your customer they are getting the BEST price and the best value without discounting!

GRANDPA LESSON #4
 LIVE!

My Grandpa went skiing every year until he was 87. He travels the world with his loving wife Leslie. He eats the freshest food and drinks the world's best Scotch. Living a good life will help you in business as well! The more you do, the more people, i.e. potential customers, you will meet. The more you do, the more you learn. Grow in your interests and in your life and you will see your business
grow as well!

   Grandpa Lesson #5 GIVE!
I recently read a book recommended by a smart jeweler called "The Go GIVER". It talks about how when you give, you get in return. (For example by giving you tips on how to improve your business, I hope that you will give me a chance at a diamond call.)

My Grandfather's jewelry store hosts a Mother's Day Brunch every year for over 200 mothers of Foster children. This is a great way to give back to the community and to get your store name noticed. In my opinion, one of the best returns you can get from partnering with a charity is if you can get them to send a message to THEIR members. For example if you could have the Breast Cancer foundation send an email to all their members saying that they will get a free pin and $20 donated to help fight breast cancer with every purchase they make at your jewelry store.

CAll OLYMPIAN DIAMONDS for
OLD EURO & OLD MINER DIAMONDS!

What Dealers Look For when buying old cuts....Modern stones are cut for brilliance. Which means light comes in and light comes right back at you. Old stones tend to be a little deeper - light comes in and your eye is more drawn into the stone; they're not as brilliant, but collectors of old diamond jewelry have grown to love this softer, simpler path of light.
Old stones are not going to be as White. There's a reason for that. Most of the white stones we get in the market today come from Southern Africa - Angola, Botswana, Sierra Leone - and those mines didn't exist then. Stones were coming from Brazil and Venezuela. For the most part, these are darker stones. As a general rule, however, old stones in mountings face one or two color grades whiter than they actually are. Because of their open culet, color is not trapped in the stone. Information from Rapaport trade magazine 8/1/09 article by Phyllis Schiller and Michael Goldstein
