***Why DIAMOND Certificates are NOT Important....

A DIAMOND CERTIFICATE IS JUST A DESCRIPTION!

It is important for customers to know that the purpose of a diamond certificate is to identify and describe the gem...That's all! Many customers feel a certification is a guarantee or warranty.

It is not.

The disclosure on GIA & EGL certificates states:

"This certificate is NOT an appraisal, guarantee, or warranty".

The color and clarity are the OPINION of the lab at that time. Color and clarity results can differ based on when or who grades the diamond. This is why the same diamond can go to the same lab and receive different grades! EGL even states on the bottom of each cert that;

"Diamond grading is NOT an exact science and this report represents only the best professional OPINION of this company"

If it is just the opinion of one gemologist, why should it be so important?

*The reason I say diamond certs are not important is because we have all seen a beautiful diamond where the cert did not reflect how beautiful the diamond was! Also, we have all seen a nice looking certificate where the diamond was not pretty. Dimensions alone will not tell you if a diamond is bright or pretty. Hopefully by convincing your customer the diamond is more than a piece of paper, you will be able to sell a beautiful diamond, not just a nice looking cert.

....THE TRUTH ABOUT EGL INTERNATIONAL CERTS!

I have heard many jewelers complain about EGL International certs. I think its time we addressed this issue.

EGL International uses different standards than GIA. That does not mean you should disregard a diamond just because it comes with an EGL lab report. Various labs serve various audiences. Many customers can not afford a GIA certed diamond. The problem occurs when the jeweler does not properly disclose the differences. The market proves that GIA and EGL are different by how differently they are priced! It is fine to sell EGL International certs but be up front with the customer. Tell the customer that EGL International uses a different standard of grading than GIA. Honesty is the best policy.

Different is not always bad! EGL invented the SI3, which almost the whole world, including the RAPAPORT price list, recognizes as necessary. There were too many diamonds that were falling between SI2 and I1.

Competition is good! If there was only GIA then they could raise prices and GIA could essentially charge any price they wanted for certs.

DIAMOND GRADING IS SUBJECTIVE

Clarity is complicated.

There is no master set for clarity. What is the scientific basis for clarity? All labs seem to have different scales. No two human brains are the same. Also, we all see color differently. There will always be a gray area. I have been all over the county and I have seen different jewelers and appraisers grade diamonds differently. It is impossible to have one standard.

COOL FACT! I found it very interesting that, in Japan, the price of a diamond depends on WHO graded it! For example a 1ct GIA F VVS2 graded by Mr. Abe sells for more than an 1ct GIA F VVS2 graded by Mr. Jim.

You are the expert!

You owe it to the customer to tell them

what you know. If you only sell GIA's, that is fine, but keep in mind that when you bad-mouth EGL it makes you look bad. Buying a diamond is very emotional. If you are negative, you could kill the sale. Also by only selling GIA, you might be pricing yourself out of the reach of many customers.

Show your customer multiple

diamonds with certs from different

labs and let them decide! Say something like "Here are diamonds certified by different labs. GIA certed diamonds are more expensive because they have a higher standards. Now which one looks prettiest to you?" Earn their trust by telling them the truth and sell more diamonds by having the most possible options available!
