Driving Fargo Moorhead's economy through innovation

In terms of entrepreneurism and innovation, the Fargo Moorhead region has a great foundation and has room for growth. And to be competitive, companies and communities need to innovate. That was the message from Richard Bendis of Innovation America during Greater Fargo Moorhead EDC's annual meeting to investors.

Bendis told a crowd of about 200 people that entrepreneurism and innovation is not just about making the next iPad or John Deere tractor, it's also about creating new ways to work together and new ways to communicate. It's that innovation, according to Bendis, that helps regions like Fargo Moorhead stay competitive in a global economy.

So what does innovation mean in terms of economic development?

"Revenge of the Squares in North Dakota"

Article in Washington Times by Joseph Bottum highlights the recent economic good fortune found in Fargo and North Dakota.

The mission of the GFMEDC is to grow and diversify the economy in Cass County, ND and Clay County, Minn. through the attraction, retention and expansion of primary-sector employers.

A primary-sector company is one that brings new wealth into the community through the sale of its goods and services outside the trade area.  This new wealth circulates and supports all other sectors of the local economy, thus making the primary sector the principle driver of economic growth.
