Last Day of Classes is Wednesday, May 23, 2012
The last day of classes for the 2011-2012 school year is Wednesday, May 23.  This last day will also be a 3 -hour early release day.

Commencement Ceremonies Scheduled for Sunday, May 20
Liberty High School and Liberty North High School will hold Commencement Ceremonies on Sunday, May 20, 2012.  The LNHS ceremony will take place at the school's fieldhouse beginning at 2:30 p.m.  LHS will hold its ceremony at the Independence Events Center the evening of May 20 beginning at 6 p.m.  Congratulations to all of our Class of 2012 graduates!

Coffee with the Community Set for Thursday
The final Coffee with the Community will take place tomorrow, Thursday, May 17.  The event will begin at 9 a.m. and will be held at the District Administration Center, 650 Conistor.  LPS Superintendent Mike Brewer will be this month's featured presenter and will provide a district update, recapping th 2011-2012 school year and looking ahead to the 2012-2013 school year.  In addition to his presentation, Brewer will also answer questions from the audience.  We hope you make plans to join us on Thursday!

The Liberty Public Schools Communications Department is currently offering a stakeholder survey.  This survey is brief and will assist in helping us determine best practices for communicating with you.  The survey can be accessed by clicking here.  Thank you for your input!

Alexander Doniphan to Open Time Capsule
Alexander Doniphan Elementary welcomes back all staff and students present during the 1999-2000 school year.  On January 3, 2000, a time capsule was buried on the Doniphan property, to be opened the year the kindergarten class became the graduating seniors of 2012.  That time is NOW!  Please join us in rediscovering items from our past.  The event will take place on Monday, May 21, at 2:30 p.m. in the Alexander Doniphan gymnasium.

LPS Educator Released Thursday

The Liberty Public Schools newspaper insert, the LPS Educator, will hit newstands on Thursday, May 17.  The spring issue will provide an update on district happenings this semester, student articles, and highlights from buildings that make up the district.  The LPS Educator will be inserted in Thursday's Liberty Tribune, along with being mailed directly to parents.

 

LPS to Host Summer Engineering Camp

Liberty Public Schools will be hosting a summer engineering camp for 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students in July at Liberty Junior High.  For participating in the four day camp, students will receive a camp t-shirt and a pizza luncheon on the final day.  If interested, you can obtain a camp brochure by clicking here.

Summer Orchestra Program Offers Free Instruction 

The Liberty Public Schools Fine Arts Department is offering free summer orchestra lessons, classes, and camps for incoming 6th through 12th grade students. Please click here to view the brochure and for the registration form. Registration deadline is Friday, May 18. Completed forms should be turned into your child's orchestra teacher, e-mailed to ksoukup@liberty.k12.mo.us, or mailed to the LPS Fine Arts Department, 801 Kent Street, Liberty, MO 64068. Please contact the Fine Arts Department at 736-5660 if you need additional information.

 

Summer Sapphire Dance Camp

Join the fun, and sign up for Liberty Sapphire Dance Camps.  The camps will be held in the Liberty Middle School gymnasium May 29-31.  The elementary clinic (grades K-5) will run from 9-10 a.m., and the secondary (grades 6-8) will run from 10-11:45 a.m.  Participants will learn several dances throughout the week and receive one-on-one assistance with dance technique.  Technique stations will include:  Leaps, Turns, Kicks, Flexibility, Sideline Pom, and Hip Hop.  Sign up today to meet and dance with the Missouri State Champion Sapphires!  Contact Coach Maggie Willis for further information.  Click here for the registration form.

 

Liberty Junior High 8th Grade Cheerleading Tryout Information

Tryouts for the 2012-2013 Liberty Junior High cheerleading squad will take place on Thursday, August 9, from 3-5 p.m. in the LJH gyms.  There will be a parent meeting on Sunday, August 5, from 2-3 p.m. in the LJH cafeteria.  In addition, clinics will be held August 6-7 from 5:15-7:15 p.m. and August 8 from 3-5 p.m.  An information packet is available in the Liberty Middle School front office regarding further important try-out details.

 

LJH 8th Grade Summer Camp Information

Liberty Junior High is offering several summer camp opportunities for incoming 8th graders.  The informational flyer is available on the LPS website and can be accessed by clicking here.

 

Upcoming Volleyball Opportunity

There are still openings available for upcoming 4th-8th graders on the Liberty Juniors Volleyball League.  If you are interested in getting your child involved in volleyball, please fill out the attached form and bring it to LHS on Monday, May 21, at 5:30 p.m. or send it to Tricia Middleton before May 21.  We will assign your child to a team at that time.  This is a great opportunity to learn the game of volleyball!

 

LMS to Host Beginning Band Retreat

Liberty Middle School will be hosting a Beginning Band Retreat June 27, 28, and 29 from 9 a.m.-noon in the LMS band room.  Complete information, including the sign-up form, can be accessed by clicking here.

State TEAM Contest Results

Liberty Public Schools had 10 District Champions that were able to attend the State TEAM (Industrial Technology) Contest held at the Lake of the Ozarks on Monday and Tuesday, May 7-8.  All students received first places, and Liberty High School had two State Champions - Will Riley in Mechanical Drafting, and Tyler Smith in CNC Woodworking.

Blue Jay Golfers Have Strong Showings at State

Liberty High School golfers Zac Dittmer and Eric Lester completed strong performances at the Class 4 State Golf Championships yesterday in Bolivar, MO.  Dittmer carded rounds of 74 and 72 on his way to a 6th place overall finish, while Lester turned in rounds of 78 and 71 to finish 10th overall.  Congratulations to both of these young men on this accomplishment!

 

Students Named to Journalism Honor Roll 

Twenty-one Liberty High School and Liberty North High School broadcasting students have been named to the National Scholastic Press Association's Journalism Honor Roll. The NSPA Honor Roll recognizes student journalists who have excelled as journalists and scholars, have served on staff for a minimum of one year, and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.75.

 

Broadcasting students achieving the NSPA Honor Roll status are, from Liberty High School, Tom Kackley, Jordan Walton, Kyle Dingus, Derek Brizendine, Lauren Holm, Hannah Knapp, Brianna Schweitzer, Anne Jackson, Sydney Triplett, Marriah Schweitzer, Nyshele Posey, Kaitlynn Norton and Darcie Nixon; and from Liberty North High School, Ryan Crisman, Kellen Burgess, Katelyn Brown, Anna Carter, Hallie Sallee, Audrey Wood, Hannah Whittaker and Jake Lewis.  Ann Bertoldie is their broadcasting teacher.  She is assisted by Katie Denison from the Niles Media Group.

 

National PTA Announces Reflections Winners

The National PTA has announced its annual "Reflection Winners" for the 2011-2012 school year.  Liberty Public Schools had a student chosen a national winner!  Andrew Reardon, representing the Liberty Middle School PTA, received an Award of Excellence in photography for his "Religious Diversity Can Unite" project.  Way to go Andrew!

 

White Rose Essay Contest Winners

Congratulations to Liberty High School sophomores Erin Martin and Haley Ferguson for their recent success in the White Rose Essay Contest, sponsored by the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education. 

 

Haley won the contest, capturing first place in the 10th-12th grade division with her essay, Art Which Transcends Pain: Roman Polanski Remembers the Krakow Ghetto. The essay will be posted on the White Rose website.

 

Erin's essay, The Lodz Ghetto: Shadows of the Dead and Pain of the Living, was first runner up in the 10th-12th division.  Both students received cash prizes and swept the top honors as sophomores, a major accomplishment.  Haley and Erin are students in Kelsie Blakley's Gifted Communication Arts II class.

 

Students to be Showcased at National Museum of American History

Katherine Herrick and Madison Jones were picked to be Missouri's representatives to showcase their exhibit at the National Museum of American History!  Both girls have agreed to participate and will be spending the day, Wednesday, June 13, showcasing their work. Only one representative from each state gets this honor, and there were seven other exhibits in contention from Missouri.  More information on this honor can be accessed by clicking here.  Way to go ladies!

 

Liberty North Student Earns NFL's Highest Rank

Taylor Watson, under the guidance of Sean Nicewaner, has earned the degree of Premier Distinction - the National Forensic League's highest degree of student membership.  A degree of Premier Distinction reflects sustained excellence in classroom activities, competition rounds, and service projects.  Students may earn points in six separate categories:  speech, debate, congress, service, district, and national.  Congratulations Taylor on this achievement!

 

Student Receives Perfect Score on National Latin Exam

Max Accardi achieved a perfect score on the 2012 National Latin Exam.  Only 1,111 students out of over 136,000 who participated in the entire United States, Australia, Zimbabwe, Canada, England, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, China, Japan, Virgin Islands, Iran, Germany, France, and Taiwan attained this distinction.  Congratulations, Max!  The LHS Latin teacher is Patricia Kurtz.

In an effort to make our Liberty Public Schools e-newsletter, QuickNews, a concise publication in which subscribers can read in a timely fashion, district/community announcements will be advertised in the main QuickNews section for a maximum of two weeks.  After this period of time, announcements will then be transferred to our new QuickNews Bulletin Board, which is located on the LPS website provided at the link below. In addition, there are other announcements that have, in the past, not met criteria to place in this publication.  The addition of the QN Bulletin Board will allow them to now be publicized.
