UPDATE: CORNER GAS STATION -  November 3, 2011

Corral Corner Gas Station
Soil and Groundwater Tests

Last summer, CapRock Geology Inc. tested soil samples as well as monitoring and drinking wells on the 0.7 acre former gas station site at the corner of Highway 68 and Corral de Tierra. They determined that there is no contamination of the water in any monitoring or drinking wells.

The county Environmental Health Department found the same result when it tested the domestic well on the project site and the irrigation well on the adjoining Villa golf course.  Although no drinking water contamination was found, a small amount of contamination was discovered in the soil and water in one of the four borings drilled into the site of the underground tanks that were removed in 2002.

CapRock submitted a work plan to clean up all contaminated soils on the gas station site after the old gas station is demolished.  The workplan has been approved by the Environmental Health Department.  The details appear below.

Workplan for Excavating Soil

The Monterey County Environmental Health Department has approved a workplan submitted by CapRock to remove all contaminants on and under the corner gas station site.

The workplan elements include:
  • demolish existing building before excavating.
  • excavate and remove all impacted soils.
  • conduct tests to confirm a clean site.

The potential excavation area is circled in the adjacent CapRock map.

Gas Station Concept
Gas Station

The Phelps family owns both the 11 acres where the new shopping village will go, and the corner gas station site.  The family plans to demolish and rebuild the gas station in the next year.  The county will need to approve the new design.
