Corral Village Approved!

Village landscape

Greetings!

It takes a village to build a village.  Yesterday, the community did it.

After several hours of mostly positive testimony in a room filled with supporters wearing YES stickers, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 to approve the Corral Village.

The Phelps family will work with the county staff between now and August 30th to answer lingering questions about driveways and the rainwater harvesting and recharge system.  On August 30, the supervisors will meet one more time to determine final conditions of approval.

Corral Residents Carry the Day

The Salinas hearing room was packed full with Toro Area residents wearing "YES" stickers. Mothers with young children, union construction workers, business people and long time residents sat patiently through hours of testimony until the final vote.

Village supporters talked about the need for a place to gather, a desire to reduce the amount of time traveling on 68, and support for the local Phelps family and the village design.

After the public's comments, the supervisors spoke.  Supervisor Salinas said he's supported the project for 20 years.  He apologized to the community and the Phelps for the drawn-out, bureaucratic review process. Salinas said that the project will help both the environment and the economy.  Supervisors Armenta and Calcagno joined Salinas in giving the village a final OK.

A Giant Thank You to the Village Supporters

Words can't express how heartened my family was to have so much support from our community. It truly would not have happened without you.  We realize your sacrifices in making this happen, the work time lost, the babysitters you had to pay, and the unpleasantness of the public debate conflict.  You braved all this because you want this project to move ahead.

We are honored, and we will continue to do our best to deliver the best project that meets all your expectations.
