Gourmet Dinner to Benefit Gifts of Love

Our first dinner at the home of Chrissie and John D'Esopo of Avon, was fantastic! The food was amazing and the setting truly something to behold. The ticket price was $100 and all proceeds went to benefit Gifts of Love and our programs in the community. If you missed this fabulous opportunity, they will be hosting a second dinner in March. Contact Lori at lshield@giftsoflovect.org for additional information.

100th Day of School
Students and teachers in Canton, Avon and Simsbury celebrated the 100th day of school by collecting items for needy families. Students in each class donated a different item, ranging from canned goods to toiletries. The goal was ambitious but simple - to collect at least 100 of each item. Thank you to Cherry Brook School, Latimer Lane and Roaring Brook for collecting hundreds of items for our pantry in celebration of the 100th Day of School! The pantry shelves are fully stocked thanks to your fantastic efforts!

Tim Goodwin, Executive Director of the Community Farm of Simsbury |
Tim Goodwin and Cori Behm of the Community Farm of Simsbury recently visited Pine Grove School in Avon to talk to 2nd graders about where food comes from and what helps plants grow. They deliver hands-on lessons concerning plant growth. Later this spring a follow-up lesson will take place in which students plant organic seeds in the classroom and learn the steps necessary to cultivate the seedlings. Kids will grow a seedling to be planted at the Farm or at raised garden beds constructed at the Avon Senior Center.

The program concludes with a field trip to the farm or Senior Center where students transplant their seedlings into the gardens where food is grown for Gifts of Love. All programs incorporate the importance of community service while educating students about sound nutritional choices, a healthy lifestyle and the issue of hunger in our community. |
