Volunteer Opportunities:

Gifts of Love was closed the morning of August 15 to work at Foodshare's Regional Market. The entire staff spent 3 hours breaking down large food donations into smRegional Marketaller bags to be given out at Mobile Foodshare sites across our region. We are the FIRST agency to volunteer as a group and our time was truly appreciated.

Mobile Foodshare units take perishable food items such as highly nutritious fruits and vegetables to people in neighborhoods who need it most.  By working with a network of sponsoring agencies that provide neighborhood sites and the volunteers to manage them, they provided over 2.6 million pounds of produce in 2009.

A Moblie Foodshare unit visits Avon twice per month to provide fruits and vegetables to people in the Farmington River Valley.

This is a great group volunteer opportunity so if you have any groups interested, email me at dgoode@giftsoflovect.org

Food picA Few Hours Can Make A Huge Difference

Gifts of Love has many volunteer opportunities, from working in our office directly with clients, helping stock our shelves, assisting in the clothing room and many others. Now Foodshare is seeking volunteers to assist us in our local community.

One of Foodshare's priorities is finding additional retail food pick up volunteers. The basic idea is to have volunteers pick up small amounts of food at the smaller food outlets once a week and deliver them directly to Gifts of Love. Please look at the attached flyer. If you or someone you know might be interested in the program, please contact dgoode@giftsoflovect.org.

Business After Hours with the

Avon Chamber of Commerce

August 17 Gifts of Love hosted the Avon Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours. Gifts of Love has been a proud member of the Chamber for many years and it was a  wonderful night having the other members join us for appetizers and drinks. Chamber

Appetizers were made from vegetables grown at the Simsbury Community Farm. Most of the produce grown in the 1 acre garden is donated to Gifts of Love and Simsbury Social Services.

Thank you to all that joined us!

"Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year but when you volunteer, you vote everyday about the kind of community you want to live in."
