Ready Set Cook!
 And The Winner Is . . .
The team of Van Hurd, Executive Sous Chef at the Country Club of Farmington and contestant on TV show "Hells' Kitchen", Mary Glassman, Simsbury First Selectman and Josie Tiffany of Avon. They successfully wowed the judges with their food creations made with mystery food pantry ingredients - Cap 'n Crunch, beef jerky and a jar of pickled cabbage!
Held at Tunxis Plantation, Hurd was all about beating his boss, and fellow former "Hell's Kitchen" contestant, Kevin Cottle, who won the Ready Set Cook cook-off two years ago. Cottle is now executive chef at the Farmington Country Club and brought Hurd on board as his right-hand man. Also competing was another reality show star, Tyler Anderson, from the Copper Beech Inn who won a segment of Food Network's "Chopped" and Hartford's own Billy Carbone from Dish Restaurant, who lamented his lack of Hollywood pedigree.
Thank you to all of our chefs, and contestants, Mary Glassman, First Selectman of Simsbury, Linda Schofield, Simsbury's State Representative, Jim Bosh Country 92.5 morning co-host and Bob Crawford, the voice of the Wolf Pack. And our judges, Mary Ellen Fillo author of the Hartford Courant Java Column, Terry Walters, author of best selling book Clean Food, David Pianka chef at Papacelle and Eric Bush, wine director at Flemings Restaurant! Rachel Lutzker of Fox 61 and Corey Myers of Country 92.5's morning show were guest MC's and added their flair to the event!

You never know where Gifts of Love staff and volunteers will turn up and this June 17th it was at the Phish concert where we were asked to help man the memorabilia tables and pass out Gifts of Love information. The band representatives contacted us because of our small size, grass roots efforts and connection with the Simsbury Community Farm. They were most interested in our efforts to bring healthy food to our local pantries.
We are assisting people eat healthy even in tough economic times and were thrilled to be recognized by the band!

This year, the summer months are even busier than the winter months. Most children can't wait for summer vacation! But many of them leave behind the free meals provided at school. Our pantry is increasingly busy as parents find ways to provide for their children over the summer months. Especially this summer when stretched budgets may not be able to include camp. |
