Dear PTA and PTSA Leaders,

Thank you all for volunteering your time, energy and talents this year to support our students and families. Your efforts truly make a difference in the lives of the children of Seattle.  Please take time to reflect upon all that you, your PTA, and your school have accomplished.

This summer, the Seattle Council PTSA will be hosting its annual PTA Presidents and Principals Breakfast on Wednesday, August 8.  This event is for incoming PTA and PTSA Presidents.  If your PTA President cannot attend, please send another member of your board.  (We would love to invite all PTA leaders, but we are limited by space.)  More information about this event will be coming soon.  If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact me.

Have a wonderful summer!

Sincerely,

Lauren McGuire

President, Seattle Council PTSA

Help Your PTA Learn More about the School Levies and How to Support Them

-From Schools First

Two crucial levy renewals will be on the ballot this school year.  The first, an Operations Levy, funds approximately 30% of the District's operating budget.  Past operating levies partially paid for instructional programs; costs related to full-day kindergarten; a sixth period at high schools; student activities such as athletics, drama and music; bilingual and special education services; textbooks and classroom supplies; transportation and security.  The second, a Capital Levy (BEX IV), funds building and infrastructure projects.  It is expected that BEX IV will, in part, be used to address over capacity issues in the District by creating new or improved classroom space.

Historically, many PTAs have endorsed the levies, provided a PTA donation to the campaign and school parents have actively volunteered to support passage of the levies. Schools First, the non-profit, volunteer coalition that campaigns for renewal of the levies, has speakers available to come to one of your meetings to share information about the levies and discuss the endorsement/donation process.  Please contact Kerry Cooley-Stroum, who will be on the Scholars at Garfield/PTA Academic Committee next year, at kcs@seanet.com for more information and to schedule a brief presentation.  More information is available at www.schoolsfirstseattle.org.

Thank you,

Greg Wong, Schools First President (and outgoing John Muir PTA President)

One Week Left to Get Membership Data Ready for Next Year - Check for Duplicates and Enter Your Officers

-From WSPTA

As the current school year is winding down, it's time to start getting ready for next year.  Here are some things you'll want to do right away, if you haven't done so already.

1.  Check the Membership Enrollment Site (www.wastateptambrs.org) for Duplicates.

Log on to your local unit Membership Enrollment site and click on the Membership Reports link on the top menu bar.  Look on the left menu bar and click on Membership Roster.  Scroll through the list of members and write down the ID numbers of any duplicate members.  Email support@wastatepta.org to have the duplicates removed.   Your unit may receive an invoice for the duplicate members entered into your PTA's roster.

Please be sure to submit all your dues for this year before June 30.

2.  While on the Site Enroll Your 2012-2013 Officers

Make a note of the ID numbers for your PTA's new officers.  Click on the Incoming Officers link at the top of the screen and enter the ID number for each officer in the appropriate field position.  Click on the preview button and make sure the name matches the position, then click the submit button.

If this is not done, the State PTA office will not know the names of the new officers and we will not know where to send important information.  If your PTA is unable to enter the incoming officers contact Melissa Anderson at support@wastatepta.org with their names, positions and contact information.

Note:  Do not enter 2012-2013 members (other than officers) until after July 15, 2012.

Appointment of a New Position in SPS: Executive Director of School Operations

-From SPS

As we continue to plan for the 2012-13 school year and beyond, we recognize the need for increased collaboration between all departments. Providing all students with an education that will prepare them for college, career and life is our mission, and along with that comes many operational duties.

Additionally, coordination between departments is essential as the District begins to discuss system-wide changes that impact schools and families, such as school boundaries, bell times, instructional programming, athletics and transportation.  To ensure this, today I am pleased to appoint Phil Brockman to a new position: Executive Director of School Operations. Phil, who has served as Executive Director of Schools for the Northeast Region since 2010, starts this grant-funded position on July 1.
