Seattle Public Schools to Discontinue Traffic Education on August 31
-From SPS
Starting in the fall, the District will no longer offer traffic education. During lean budget times, the District can no longer afford to offer this program, which is not a part of our core academic mission.
Costs to maintain and insure a car fleet, as well as staffing costs, are not fully covered by student fees. In addition, the District is no longer able to offer competitive prices to families, so we are seeing dwindling enrollment in traffic education.
However, Seattle Public Schools will still offer summer traffic education this year, before ending the program on Aug. 31, 2012. If families would like to sign up for summer traffic education, please visit online. |
Seattle School Board Meetings will have a New Start Time as of June 6
-From SPS
At the School Board's Executive Committee meeting in April, the committee decided to start the regular Board meetings earlier to prevent meetings from running late into the evening.
Beginning on June 6, Board meetings will start at 4:15pm. Public testimony will begin at 5pm, before the Board hears from staff on introduction and action items on the agenda. Board members believe that the 5pm public testimony start time still allows the public to meaningfully engage with the Board.
The Board will monitor how the meetings proceed for the next few months and revisit the decision in the fall. If the 5pm start time for public testimony does not allow for family members and community members to testify, the Board will revisit the issue and make any necessary changes.
Board meetings are held the first and third Wednesdays of every month. Families, staff and the community can come in person to the meeting at the John Stanford Center, 2445 3rd Ave. South, or view the meetings streamed live on SPS-TV or on Comcast Cable Channel 26. For more information on viewing options, click here.
The Board also accepts written public testimony if someone cannot attend the Board meeting. Testimony and feedback can be sent to SchoolBoard@seattleschools.org. For rules on testifying at a Board meeting, click here.
The School Board's Executive Committee also recently released its Board meeting calendar for the 2012-13 school year. |
