Dear PTA and PTSA Leaders,
As I approach the end of our Washington State PTA Convention, I am impressed at the amount of information I have received, the people I have met, and the connections I have made here. Each local unit (school PTA) is part of a larger organization that they may or may not know much about. While what we do for our school is important, it is also important to understand the larger organization we are a part of, and take advantage of the wonderful resources available.
I am writing to ask each of you, if it is not there already, to add a line to your budget for convention. If each local unit sends one (or more!) to convention the first weekend in May, they will bring back knowledge and skills that are critical for long term success. They will also bring back motivation, excitement, and awareness that can energize your board.
Attending convention, and legislative assembly, also gives a voice and vote to your local unit. There are some ongoing issues (charter schools, for one) that will continue to be debated and voted on. Bring your membership's opinion to the discussion, and share your ideas for the benefit of all children. Put it on your PTA calendar now!
Sincerely, Ann Weber NW Area Director Seattle Council PTSA

Seattle School Board Meetings will have a New Start Time as of June 6
-From SPS
At the School Board's Executive Committee meeting in April, the committee decided to start the regular Board meetings earlier to prevent meetings from running late into the evening.
Beginning on June 6, Board meetings will start at 4:15pm. Public testimony will begin at 5pm, before the Board hears from staff on introduction and action items on the agenda. Board members believe that the 5pm public testimony start time still allows the public to meaningfully engage with the Board.
The Board will monitor how the meetings proceed for the next few months and revisit the decision in the fall. If the 5pm start time for public testimony does not allow for family members and community members to testify, the Board will revisit the issue and make any necessary changes.
Board meetings are held the first and third Wednesdays of every month. Families, staff and the community can come in person to the meeting at the John Stanford Center, 2445 3rd Ave. South, or view the meetings streamed live on SPS-TV or on Comcast Cable Channel 26. For more information on viewing options, click here.
The Board also accepts written public testimony if someone cannot attend the Board meeting. Testimony and feedback can be sent to SchoolBoard@seattleschools.org. For rules on testifying at a Board meeting, click here.
The School Board's Executive Committee also recently released its Board meeting calendar for the 2012-13 school year. |
