On April 4, staff from SPS, including Mark Teoh from Research, Evaluation, and Assessment (REA) and Bob Vaughan from Advanced Learning, will be joined by John Cronin from the Northwest Evaluation Association (the makers of the MAP assessment) to talk with families and parents about the 2011 re-norming of their children's MAP test as well as address other questions related to MAP testing.  This open meeting will be held at the John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence in room 2700 from 5 to 6pm, prior to the school board meeting.  For questions about this event, please contact the REA department at [email protected].

Input Requested for Proposed Change to SPS Board Meeting Start Times

-From SPS

The School Board is reviewing ideas for how to make the regular Board meetings (held on the first and third Wednesdays of most months) more efficient and respectful of the time of those participating and watching. With the goal of Board meetings ending earlier, staff presented the Executive Committee with the idea of moving the start time of regular Board meetings earlier (4:15pm or 4:30pm). Because the start time would affect not only the timing of the business portion of the meeting, but also the student presentations and public testimony, the Executive Committee asked that the Board Office post the options that are being considered and ask for feedback from the public.

To view the timing options if the Board meetings started earlier, please click here.

If you would like to offer feedback, please email Theresa Hale at [email protected] by April 6, 2012.

It would be the most helpful if you address the following questions:
1) Do you support moving the start time of regular Board meetings earlier (i.e. 4:15pm or 4:30pm)?
2) If so, indicate which option you prefer and why.
3) If not, why not?

Volunteers Needed for WA State PTA Convention

The WA State PTA Convention is quickly approaching.  Registration information was mailed to your Council and Local Unit Presidents last week and the information is currently up and running on the state website.  This year's theme is "Celebrating Diversity - Envision, Empower, Encourage".  There are a number of great workshops offered along with exciting main speakers.

If you would like to attend convention and can contribute a few hours each day, you and your members can attend convention at no charge.  This is a great opportunity to attend convention workshops while providing valuable volunteer time.  Registration forms can be found online.  If you are interested in volunteering, please download the Registration form and submit to the WA State PTA Office.  Positions are filled on a "first come, first served basis".  So, register quickly.

If you would like more information, please contact Andrea Bown, Convention Worker Liaison at [email protected]

The Seattle School Board Approves Procedure on Relationship between the Board and Superintendent

-From SPS

The Seattle School Board on Wednesday unanimously approved School Board Procedure 1620BP, which clarifies the roles and responsibilities of both the Board and the Superintendent.

Procedure 1620BP clarifies Board Policy No.1620which was adopted by the Board on June 1, 2011. Board President, Michael DeBell, proposed the procedure in January. Directors discussed and made edits in several meetings, including an amendment from Dir. Sharon Peaslee, Wednesday night, before voting 7-0 on the amended procedure.
