Dear Seattle PTA and PTSA Members,
The Seattle Council PTSA will host the Reflections Recognition Ceremony from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the John Stanford Center. We will be recognizing the work of those students whose artwork will continue on to the Washington State PTA competition.
In other news, the Washington Supreme Court ruled that our Legislature is not meeting its constitutional responsibility to fully fund basic education. To read the Court's decision on the McCleary case, click here. The lawsuit was supported by a coalition of more than 380 organizations, including 184 school districts in Washington and the Washington State PTA. To read more about the coalition supporting McCleary, visit the Network for Excellent Washington Schools (NEWS) website.
In spite of the good news, SPS will likely be facing a $25M budget shortfall for next year. I encourage PTA and PTSA members to contact their state legislators to tell them about the importance of K-12 education. To find your legislators, click here.
Sincerely,
Lauren McGuire
President, Seattle Council PTSA |

SPS Seeks Community Volunteers for Special Education Advisory & Advocacy Council (SEAAC)
-From SPS
Seattle Public Schools is seeking unpaid volunteers from our ethnically, linguistically and culturally diverse communities to serve on the Special Education Advisory & Advocacy Council (SEAAC), for terms of one year.
The purpose of this committee is to advise Seattle Public Schools staff on issues of Special Education. We thank Rick Minutoli for his last several years of leadership. During this time SEAAC identified and advised the Superintendent and district leadership of the top three priorities in Special Education. This year, SEAAC has provided parent and community input on the roles and characteristics desired in the Executive Director of Special Education, and has been working to identify problems of practice in discipline and capacity management. Moving forward, future areas of focus will include advising district leadership on effective and efficient communication, advising on the development of student-friendly policies and family-friendly tools.
Interested individuals should submit background information and reasons for their interest via email to specialed@seattleschools.org no later than 5:00 pm on Wednesday, January 18. Nominations will be reviewed between January 30 and February 6.
