Aki Kurose Middle School Academy Increases Attendance by Remarkable 3.7 Percent in Seven Weeks
-From SPS
The most diverse zip code in the country is home to a new national champion. Aki Kurose Middle School Academy in south Seattle has been named the winner of the 2011 Get Schooled Fall Attendance Challenge. The students and staff will be recognized with a star-studded event and significant college scholarships later this winter.
Sponsored by the Get Schooled Foundation, the friendly competition included nearly 80,000 students at 73 schools in 17 states between October 3 and November 18. Leading the pack in the nation, Aki Kurose improved its attendance by a remarkable 3.7 percent. On average, schools see less than a 2 percent annual gain in attendance.
"I'm extremely proud of the students, staff and the Aki Kurose community for winning the Get Schooled Fall Attendance Challenge National Championship," said Mia Williams, Principal of Aki Kurose Middle School Academy. "Get Schooled has been great for us. We're using the momentum, school spirit and the increase in student engagement from the challenge to focus on improving academic achievement school-wide."
In January, Get Schooled will launch another national challenge - this one focused on a key milestone related to students' likelihood of success in college: completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Details are at www.getschooled.com. For more information, contact Teresa Wippel, SPS Media Relations, (206) 252-0203. |

News from Region 6
PTA and the Law
Thursday, January 26, 6-9pm at Lincoln HS
Saturday, February 4, 9am-noon at Cleveland HS
Region 6 will offer two more sessions of PTA & the Law this winter. One will be on Thursday, January 26, 5:30 check-in, 6-9 pm class at the Lincoln High School site in Seattle; the second will be on Saturday, February 4, 8:30 am check-in, 9 am - noon class at Cleveland High School in Seattle. The registration fee of $40 (postmarked by January 24) covers as many board members, administrators or general members, as your PTA wishes to send. If someone in your group wants to attend the January 26 session while another person in your PTA can only come on February 4, that's okay - just indicate who is coming when on the attached form.
Remember that the WSPTA training bylaw requires every PTA local unit or council to send at least one executive committee member (elected officer) to a session of PTA & the Law during the PTA year. This requirement cannot be met by on-line learning courses, nor can the Region Service Delivery Team present PTA & the Law on an individual basis.
We appreciate the efforts you have all made to receive training this year and hope these additional sessions will be helpful.
Also - Region 6 will host a Spring Conference the evening of Thursday, March 22. Details are still being worked out, so if you have suggestions for what classes or topics would be especially welcome, please call or e-mail me within the next week.
Thank you all for your continuing efforts to "Make every child's potential a reality."
Leanne Hawkins Region 6 Director, Washington State PTA
