State of the District

Last Wednesday, Interim Superintendent Dr. Susan Enfield presented the State of the District. Highlights of the presentation include an increasing graduation rate from 67% to 73% and dramatic increases in number of students meeting or above standards on state tests for West Seattle Elementary, Dearborn Park Elementary and Mercer Middle School. Congratulations to the students, teachers, staff, principals and families at those three schools and across the district. Their hard work and dedication is helping our students succeed.

In addition, SPS students on average out perform the state average on state exams with the exception of 10th grade math and writing. While the district improved overall, the opportunity gap in Seattle Public Schools still persists.

Please join Executive Directors Brianna Dusseault and Michael Tolley to review the District's vision and work plan for the Southeast region, see newly disaggregated 2010-11 student performance data, and learn about the upcoming IB (International Baccalaureate) program at Rainier Beach High School.

We hope our families and community can join us as we work together to build high-achieving, vibrant schools in our Southeast neighborhood.

Meet Your Ombudsman Day

Saturday, December 3

9:30am to noon at the OEO Office, 155 N.E. 100th St. #210, Seattle

The Office of the Education Ombudsman (OEO) resolves complaints, disputes, and problems between families and elementary and secondary public schools in all areas that affect student learning. We function independently from the public school system and provide an alternative to costly lawsuits and administrative hearings. Our services are available to students from Kindergarten to 12th grade, and are free and confidential.

A large percentage of ombudsmen work takes place over the telephone. We realize how important it is to also meet our clients and have conversations in person.

Please join us for a delicious, light breakfast so we can talk further about education issues that matter to you and your children. Children are welcome to attend with you!

For more information telephone (206) 729-3232 or go to www.paretnslearn.org
