Dear PTA and PTSA Leaders,

The Seattle Council PTSA offers its condolences to State Senator Scott White's family.  Senator White passed away last Friday.  He was a Seattle Public School parent who made a concerted effort to make sure parent voices were heard in Olympia.  Donations can made to the Wedgwood Elementary PTSA, EarthCorps, or the Scott White Memorial Fund, an education fund set up for his two children, at Wells Fargo Bank.

Van Asselt Elementary parents, teachers and community members formed a PTA last Thursday evening with thirty members. I'd like to congratulate and thank the Van Asselt parents for their efforts in increase family engagement and leadership in their school. I'd also like to warmly welcome them into the growing circle of PTAs that serve Seattle's students.

Please share information in this newsletter with members of your community.

Sincerely,

Lauren McGuire

President, Seattle Council PTSA

Let Your Voice Be Heard - Opportunities to Give Your Input on the Permanent Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools

The Seattle School Board will decide this winter whether to conduct a national search for a Superintendent or whether to appoint Interim Superintendent Dr. Susan Enfield. Before the School Board decides, they will seek input on the traits that members of the public would like to see in a Superintendent. The School Board has partnered with the Seattle Council PTSA to help gather this information from Seattle Public School families. As a part of this we are hosting three community meetings in November where families can share their thoughts with members of the School Board. There will also be a survey seeking the same input available in mid-November.

Families of all students in Seattle Public Schools are encouraged to attend and share their comments in these free and welcoming community meetings hosted by the Seattle Council PTSA.

Monday, November 14, at Roosevelt High School, 7:00-8:30pm

Tuesday, November 15, at Denny International Middle School, 7:00-8:30pm

Thursday, November 17, at South Shore K-8, 7:00-8:30pm

Childcare and light snacks will be available starting at 6:30pm at all locations.  For interpretation services please email barbara@seattlecouncilptsa.org or call (206)364-7430.

SPS Facilities and Capacity Management Advisory Committee

Seattle Public Schools formed a Facilities and Capacity Management Advisory Committee (FACMAC).  The FACMAC Committee is targeted to have representation from the 7 school board director district regions, ELL, Special Education, Advanced Learning Alternative schools, Seattle Council PTSA, City of Seattle government, etc. consisting of 32 committee members.

The primary purpose of the Committee is to advise Seattle School District staff in its continual process of facilities planning for the short, intermediate and long term horizons.  The Committee's work will include periodic evaluation of and input to SPS' ongoing facility planning activities and implementation of the various facility plans. Engagement will include study and discussion in the areas of demographics, capital improvements and special instructional program accommodations.

The district's enrollment for 2011-12 is approximately 1,500 students above last year.  While this is very encouraging news for SPS, it also means that addressing over-crowding and making timely decisions on capacity management is extremely important.  As a result, SPS would like to aggressively move forward in using the Committee to help shape recommendations to the superintendent.

Families and Education Levy

Election Day is Tuesday, November 8

The Seattle Council PTSA voted to endorse a VOTE YES on the Families and Education Levy that will be on the ballot this November. The Levy funds programs that support early learning, school-based health centers, family support and out-of-school programs.

Please consider having your PTSA/PTA learn more about the levy. Contact SCPTSA Board member Naheed Nizam at nanizam@gmail.com, if you would like the names of speakers who would be willing to come to your school and discuss the levy with your community. Find out more at Families and Education Levy.
