Dear Seattle PTA and PTSA Leaders,

Thanks to everyone who attended the SCPTSA General Meeting and Spring Leadership Training.  We had a great turnout with more than 80 people and 35 schools attending.  We passed our budget for next year as well as elected our new officers.  I welcome and congratulate our new team, and thank them for volunteering to be a part of the Seattle Council PTSA.

In the meantime, I am part of the SPS's Demographics Task Force, along with 22 other family and community members.  We are working to understand how enrollment projections are made.

Sincerely,

Lauren McGuire

President, Seattle Council PTSA

SPS Family Survey: Starting June 13

-- from SPS

The SPS Research, Evaluation and Assessment department will send out the 2010-2011 Family Survey by phone and e-mail starting on June 13th and will continue through June 20th. The survey will first be sent to families who have elementary students, then middle, and finally high school. There will be one phone call and an e-mail correspondence. If you prefer the e-mail correspondence you will have 4 days to complete the survey online. The survey will be offered in the top 5 languages, English, Chinese, Vietnamese, Somali, and Spanish. The survey results will be posted on the School Reports in the fall and given to school leaders. Please direct questions about the family survey to Nicole VanVoorhis, [email protected]. Thank you and we look forward to your participation in this year's Family Survey!

Families and Education Levy Kick-off

Saturday, June 18th from 10:30 to 11:30am.

at El Centro de la Raza, 2524 16th Avenue South

-- From Yes! Families and Education Levy committee

Please join us along with civic leaders, community activists, education advocates and school kids to celebrate the official launch the 2011 Families & Education Levy campaign!

The Families & Education Levy, set to expire this year, will provide $232 million of support for:

  • Enhanced academic programs at schools with a high proportion of low-income students
  • School-based health clinics proven to increase learning and graduation rates
  • Early-learning programs that improve academic success
  • Extra learning time and summer school programs for students struggling to advance from middle to high school
  • Academic and college readiness programs for middle and high school students.

Seattle voters will be asked to renew and enhance the Levy, so EVERY kid in EVERY school can have the opportunity to succeed.

Additional details about the levy can be found at our website: www.familiesandeducationlevy.org

Bring a friend - kids are welcome! We hope to see you there.

College Bound Scholarships - Deadline June 30th

The College Bound Scholarship program provides hope and incentive for students and families who otherwise might not consider college as an option because of its cost.

The amount of the scholarship will be based on tuition rates at Washington public colleges and universities and will cover the amount of tuition and fees (plus $500 for books) not covered by other state financial aid awards.

Low-income 7th and 8th grade students who sign a pledge by June 30th of their 8th grade year are eligible. Students promise to graduate from high school, demonstrate good citizenship and to seek admission to a college or university. Family income will be re-checked and college admission confirmed after the student graduates from high school.
