Books for Teachers -The Friends of the Seattle Public Library Spring Sale April 15- 17

The Friends continue to provide $100 to some Seattle Public School teachers at Title I schools to buy books and materials at its twice-a-year book sales.  During the last three book sales, over 110 teachers from 14 schools have been able to purchase over $11,000 worth of books and materials for their classes.

The Books for Teachers program has been so well received by teachers and students alike that an additional $6,000 is being provided for the upcoming spring sale.  These funds are made possible by the generosity of the Renee B. Fisher Foundation.

If you are (or know of) a Seattle Public School teacher at a Title I school, and would like to receive a $100 grant, contact Joan Abrevaya at joanabrevaya@gmail.com

The upcoming spring sale runs April 15-17 (April 15 is the Members Only Preview Sale).  Hours on Saturday, April 16 are 9 am - 5 pm; Sunda y is 11 am - 4 pm.  The sale is held at Warren G. Magnuson Park, 7400 Sand Point Way NE, Hangar Bldg. #30 and The Brig (for cds).

The City of Seattle's Families and Education Levy Update

On March 28, 2011 the Seattle City Council voted to put the Families and Education Levy on this year's general election ballot: Families and Education Levy - Council Bill 117103.  Click here to read the levy.  The City of Seattle sponsors this levy and determines how the money will be spent.  This is a seven year levy, and will be on the ballot in November.  The levy will raise $231M over seven years.

On May 9, 2011, the SCPTSA will host a panel discussion on the Families and Education Levy during our general meeting.  We encourage PTA leaders to take part of the discussion and get more information about the city Levy.

From the City Council website
Using researched-based best practices, the Levy proposal seeks to reduce the academic achievement gap by targeting the students and schools that need the most help. The renewed Levy would provide a spectrum of support interventions, including (but not limited to):
  • early learning for pre-kindergartners;
  • focused academic support for children who have fallen behind at key school transition points;
  • school-based health centers proven to keep kids in class; and
  • case management services to families who need extra help negotiating the education system.
