April 29th: Washington State PTA Emerging Minority Leaders Conference

Dear Seattle PTA and PTSA Leaders,

The Seattle Council PTSA will be hosting an informational meeting with Interim Superintendent Susan Enfield and Interim CFO Robert Boesche on Wednesday, March 30 at the John Stanford Center.  This is an opportunity for parent leaders to ask the interim leadership team about the direction the district will be taking in the near future.  We will have light snacks starting at 6:30 p.m., and the meeting will start at 7:00 p.m.  We welcome families and community members to take part in this conversation.

Spring is around the corner.  Take time to enjoy the improving weather.  With all of the bad news lately, it is easy to feel frustrated and bewildered.  I want to remind all of you of the great work our PTAs and PTSAs are doing to support Seattle students.  Thank you!

As usual, please feel free to share this information with your members.

Sincerely,

Lauren McGuire

District sponsored Summer Semester Program canceled for the 2010-11 year

from SPS

The current estimated budget gap for Seattle Public Schools FY 11-12, based on the governor's proposed state budget, is $36.6 million.  District leadership and the school board understands fully the impact of not being able to host a district sponsored summer school program; however, with the magnitude of the budget gap, they have little recourse but to work to preserve core programs within our system.

The district will continue to provide Extended School Year (ESY) services to students who are eligible.  Contact the Special Education Department for more information.

The District has compiled a Summer School Resource List to include both internal and external offerings across the Seattle area. Please contact the programs directly for detailed information.

There is conversation underway currently with community partners to determine if there are opportunities for them to either individually or collectively offset the summer school funding gap. However, those conversations are still in flux and no definite commitments have been made at this time. Parents should contact individual schools for building specific programs, and for a list of community based summer offerings.

Seattle Public Schools to partner with City Ethics Commission

from SPS

Seattle Public Schools announced its intent to enter into an agreement to receive contracted services from the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission (SEEC). The two entities signed a memorandum of understanding that lays a framework for negotiating a detailed contract defining the working relationship by the end of April.

The City's ethics office will independently receive and investigate complaints of violations of the District's ethics policy and manage complaints of retaliation against whistleblowers. The SEEC will also provide a comprehensive training program for District employees and review the District's ethics policy and recommend any revisions it deems appropriate. The District would provide payment for these services.

The negotiated agreement will be submitted to the City Council and the School District Board of Directors for final approval.
