Dear Seattle PTA and PTSA Leaders,

Seattle Public Schools had a tumultuous week last week.  As you likely have heard from the media, SPS was involved in a financial scandal.  On Wednesday, March 2, the School Board voted to terminate the contracts for Superintendent Goodloe-Johnson and Chief Financial and Operating Officer Don Kennedy.  The School Board voted in Dr. Susan Enfield to serve as the Interim Superintendent.  Dr. Enfield has been SPS's Chief Academic Officer (CAO) since July of 2009.  The School Board is currently looking for an interim Chief Financial Officer and a Chief Operating Officer.

The Seattle Council PTSA would like to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Enfield.  Before moving to SPS, she was the Director of Teaching and Learning for Portland Public Schools and was Deputy Superintendent of Evergreen Public Schools in Vancouver, WA.  She started her career in the San Francisco area as a high school English, ESL and journalism teacher.  She holds a master's degree from Stanford University, as well as a master's and doctorate from Harvard University.

Also, two events are coming up this Saturday, March 12: the SPS Family Symposium at Ballard High School and Town Halls with legislators.  Information on these events is listed below.

As usual, please feel free to share this information with your members.

Sincerely,

Lauren McGuire

MEET with your Legislators at a Seattle TOWN HALL  on Saturday, March 12th

Legislators all over the state are meeting with local constituents to discuss this session. This is a great opportunity to meet with them close to home. Find out who they really are, what they are like and what's important to them. Air your concerns and  preferences to make sure that our kids' educational needs are kept top of mind. Hear what others are saying - this is a great learning experience and easy opportunity to advocate for kids.

Please promote this event at your school, bring a group and wear a blue scarf to show that you are PTA.
