Dear PTA and PTSA Leaders,

I hope your transition back to school after the break has been a smooth one.  The School Board met on Jan. 12 to discuss the SPS budget.  Attached is the presentation that outlines the staff's initial recommendations to close the projected $36.6M gap for 2011-12.

SCPTSA General Meeting: Mon., Feb. 7
School Budget Nuts and Bolts

John Stanford Center from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in room 2750.

Join us at our next Seattle Council PTSA General Meeting where we will discuss the nuts and bolts of school allocations.  This is a great opportunity for PTA/PTSA Presidents, Treasurers, PTA Budget Committee members and BLT (Building Leadership Team) reps to understand school budgets.  Been through school budgets lots of times before?  Come share your experiences with PTSA leaders who are new to the process.

SCPTSA Board member Andrea Baumgarten will facilitate this discussion.  District officials will be there to help answer your questions.

SCPTSA Special Election and Nominating Committee

In keeping with WA State PTA Bylaws, an election will be held to fill open positions. Lauren McGuire has been appointed Acting President by the SCPTSA Executive Board but this needs to be confirmed by a vote at the next General Meeting on Feb. 7.  If other candidates would like to present themselves, please contact us so we can ensure biographical materials are available for voting delegates in advance.  Please contact Sharon Rodgers at [email protected] if you are interested or have questions about the election.

A Nominating Committee to propose candidates for next year's SCPTSA officers will also be elected at this meeting.  Please contact Iris Okimoto Nielsen at [email protected] if you are interested in serving on the Nominating Committee.

Neighborhood Matching Fund Info and Workshops

Many schools' improvement projects are funded by City of Seattle Department of Neighborhood Matching Funds (grants). Recently, the Department of Neighborhoods revised the cycle for Small and Simple grants for this year. Deadlines are: January 18, May 9, and September 12.  The Large Project Fund (LPF) deadlines are: February 14 for Letter of Intent and April 11 for full Proposal.

Large Project Fund workshops are extremely beneficial as you're planning your project - even if your project isn't happening until the future.

January 27 from 6-8 p.m. at the Ballard Library
