Heart2

Dear Animal Compassion Networkers,

specialShe can't hear you when you call her name, but when she lays her head on your chest to feel your vibrations, she talks right back with her oinky little snorts. And yes, there are times when she'll run into something (like the back-end of my Rottie girl), but her ice-blue eyes definitely get her wherever she wants to go. Brie, a 3-month-old Bassett Hound mix puppy, and her brother were born at the shelter to a mother who was turned in as unwanted. Animal Compassion Network and a long-time foster home took in the little family until they were ready to be adopted. Brie's mom and brother found homes right away, but little Brie is still looking for a home as extraordinary as she is.

Brie

You see, Brie was born albino - solid white with a little pink nose, ears, lips and feet. Like so many albino animals, Brie was born deaf and with only partial eyesight, but do not feel sorry for this little spitfire! Her happiest moments are when she's playing with her toys and chasing the other dogs on her stubby little Basset Hound legs. She's joyful, smart and completely unaware that she is a little different.

Brie Belly

Brie would love to find a foster or adoptive home that can address her special needs, such as training through sign language. If you can help her, please email Trina Rhyne at trinarhyne@gmail.com Thanks to your support, Animal Compassion Network can help special-needs pets like Brie, as well as the hundreds of other loving family pets who are at the shelter today through no fault of their own. Life too busy to foster or adopt? Please consider our Sponsor-a-Pet Program. Your $100 sponsorship means that we literally drive to the shelter and save another cat or dog in your name. Pretty good, right? You can save a deserving shelter pet without having to take them home by clicking here! Of course, if you want to take one home, please see below for adoption events and other exciting goings-on.

 Yours in rescue,

Eileen

Animal Compassion Network and the American Red Cross of WNC Partner to Offer Pet First Aid & CPR Class plus a RedCrossLow-Cost Shot Clinic

Class and Clinic Given in Honor of  "Pet First Aid Awareness Month"

shot clinic posterWhat would you do if your pet suddenly became ill or was injured? Are you prepared to respond to an emergency? ACN is pleased to partner with The American Red Cross to offer a one-of-a-kind Pet First Aid Class on Saturday, April 16, from 10 am - 1 pm at The American Red Cross located at 100 Edgewood Road, Asheville, NC 28804 (corner of Merrimon and Edgewood). The low-cost shot clinic will be held from 2 pm to 5 pm at Pet Harmony, ACN's adoption center and retail store, 803 Fairview Street, Asheville, NC 28803.

April is nationally known as "Pet First Aid Awareness Month". The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) states that one out of four pets would survive an accident or illness if pet guardians were familiar with and capable of providing first aid when necessary. "Just like with humans, performing first aid to an injured pet prior to getting emergency veterinary assistance can be the difference between life and death," said Eileen Bouressa, ACN Executive Director, and Mary Barnett, American Red Cross of WNC Health & Safety Services Director, in a joint statement.

The pet first aid and CPR class will teach pet guardians how to recognize an emergency, how to perform CPR, how to stock and use a pet first aid kit, how to muzzle and restrain an injured animal and how to respond and prepare for emergencies. Cost of the class is $35 which includes instruction and demonstrations, an American Red Cross first aid book and a DVD for either dogs or cats.

Pre-registration is required. To register or for more information, please call Cappy Tosetti, American Red Cross Volunteer Coordinator at (828) 712-0983 or (828) 258-3888, ext.214, or via email at

tosettim@usa.redcross.org.

The shot clinic at Pet Harmony will include low-cost vaccines by Dr. Margaret Moncure of Appalachian Animal Hospital.  Vaccinations available are Rabies for $10 (both one-year and three-year*). DHLLP/DHPP for $15, Bordatella for $15 and FVRCP/FELV for $15. Microchips with a life-time registration also will be offered for $18. Cash, checks, MasterCard and Visa will be accepted.

*A three-year Rabies vaccine can only be given if the pet guardian can provide proof of a Rabies one-year vaccination)

ACN + Rollergirls = LOVE!

We are so excited! Animal Compassion Network has been Derbychosen to be the featured charity at the

Blue Ridge Rollergirls' (BRRG) April 30th bout!

BRRG Poster

BRRG chooses a charity to whom they donate a percentage of their proceeds each bout, and ACN is grateful to be named the charity for the "Derby Little Secret" bout on April 30! According to skater "Rigor Morticia," who chooses the charities:

"The Blue Ridge Rollergirls enjoy wide local community support and have made it a mission to give back:  we contribute 10% of our bout profits to local charities.  Past organizations we have supported include Care Partners Pediatric Rehabilitation Fund, the Smokey Mountain Deaf Club, and the WNC Chapter of the Girl Scouts.  We're very excited to be able to donate to such a great non-profit as the Animal Compassion Network!"

We will have several adoptable dogs available in front of the civic center before the bout. Doors open at 4:00 pm, and the first of two bouts begins at 5:00 pm. The cost is $10 in advance and $13 on the day of the bout.

Lucky_skates
