Dear Animal Compassion Networkers,

My introduction to ACN came long before I started working here. My sister had been recruited as an ACN foster home for orphaned puppies, and she was frequently seen driving around town with a cooler, heating pad and the tiniest puppies in tow. One Easter she took in the only surviving puppy whose mother had been poisoned and died giving birth. This was a puppy who had been exposed to poison and hadn't nursed a drop before his mother passed and therefore had no immunity. His chance of survival was almost nil.  When the puppy was only two days old, my sister had to go out of town for work and the puppy needed a new caretaker. I would love to tell you that person was me, but truth be told, I would open one eye at about 2 am to see my husband Brian bottle feeding the tiny bundle while he rocked and sang to him. And than again two hours later and two hours after that. Somehow I was lucky enough to have the day shift.

EB and SamsonAt four days old, the puppy started going downhill fast. He was lethargic and non-responsive. I had been warned that this would probably happen, but I decided to do what I could. It was 8:30 pm and I knew that my vet, Animal Hospital of North Asheville, was just closing. I called anyway and Dr. Early told me he'd wait for me to get there. I was no sooner through the door when Dr. Early started working on the pup. I was already crying and preparing myself to say goodbye, but Dr. Early wouldn't give up on him. He spoke to the puppy directly and said, "Come on Wild Man, we can do this." After another hour of care, the puppy pulled through. We named him Samson for his strength and he spent the next ten years as a Bouressa. Every time Samson went in to see Dr. Early for a checkup or treatment, Dr. Early would greet him with "Here comes my Wild Man."

That is just one of the many times the veterinarians at Animal Hospital of North Asheville saved the life of one of my cats and dogs - oftentimes against all odds. Which especially thrills me that AHNA is one of ACN's biggest sponsors. Just last week they sponsored ACN during the WCQS Challenge, which raised $10,000 in veterinary care from Animal Hospital of North Asheville together with behavior evaluations from our other challenge sponsor, Kim Brophy's The Dog Door Canine Services. Check out The Dog Door at its new location at 15B Broadway Avenue, next to Green Sage in Downtown Asheville.Sponsors

Animal Hospital of North Asheville has also been an annual sponsor of a cat habitat and two doggie playrooms at Pet Harmony, allowing us to showcase our healthy, happy pets for adoption in a joyful environment. And for the second year in a row, AHNA has come in as a Top Sponsor for our signature event, Taste of Compassion, which is coming up next Thursday night, November 11th, from 5:30 to 8 pm at The Venue, 21 Market Street. Buy tickets here to enjoy a wine tasting with gourmet vegetarian hors d'oeuvres, live music for dancing and a silent auction with over 200 items for bidding, including a new 2011 Subaru Outback generously donated from Prestige Subaru!

Spend any time around ACN folks and you'll know right away that every dog and cat in our foster network belongs to the volunteers and staff. We are not adopting out a rescued cat we pulled from the shelter, we are adopting out Greyson who can be a little shy at first but warms up quickly if you scratch him behind his right ear just so. We are adopting out Chance who exhibits all of the traits of a German Shepherd, but is just now learning self confidence from his foster pack at the Evan's house. We live with these cats and dogs and they belong to all of us. That is why these sponsorships from Animal Hospital of North Asheville mean so much to us. They mean we can give our foster pets the same expert and compassionate veterinary care we give to our own pets. Rescued pets deserve the best we can give them. Thank you Animal Hospital of North Asheville!
