Welcome back from what I hope was a restful and rejuvenating summer break.  The Palos 118 School District staff and administration is excited to begin the 2012-2013 school year on August 20. Our theme this year is "Building the Perfect Schools," as we strive to offer the best education to Palos 118 students.

We have been busy preparing for the students' return with a number of summer projects; from cleaning classrooms and touching up paintwork, to updating kitchen and bathroom facilities.  We are pleased with the results of our summer work efforts, and are excited to welcome our students back to all of the schools.

Palos 118 has a strong volunteer network of parents. Your child's total educational experience is richer because of efforts by the Parent Faculty Association (PFA) and Educational Foundation.  If you have not been involved in these organizations in the past, I encourage you to do so this year.  There will be opportunities to sign up at the curriculum nights in September, or you can visit our website at www.palos118.org for more information. Both the online calendar and the new handbook, which will be sent home during the first week of school, are available onlineCurriculum nights are as follows: East, September 4, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.; West, September 5,6:30 - 8:00 p.m.; and South, September 6, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

To celebrate the new school year, we will hold our annual Back to School Family Picnic on August 20 at Palos South, from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m.  With food, games, prizes, and entertainment, it is the perfect way to launch a new year of learning!  The entire  community is welcome to attend.  We encourage picnic-goers to carpool and to take advantage of the shuttle bus service at St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Church at 8410 131st St. Rain or shine, I look forward to seeing your family there.

Wishing you and your children a memorable and successful school year.

Sincerely,

Joseph M. Dubec, Ed.D.,  J.D.

Palos East Hosts Class of 1959
reunion
Dr. Joseph Dubec, Superintendent, welcomes former Palos 118 graduates to Palos East.

"It was the best of times," reminisced Howard Heatherwick, about his years in Palos School District 118. Heatherwick was one of about 35 former students from Palos 118's graduating class of 1959 at Palos East School on Friday, August 10 for a long anticipated reunion.

The group of about 35 gathered at East in the morning for a tour of the school they attended over 50 years ago, and finished their day with a luncheon at Silver Lakes Country Club. Amy Christie, Palos East Principal, and Rob Meyer, Palos East Assistant Principal, led the alumni through East.

"Watching and listening to them converse about 'old times' at Palos East was truly an enriching experience," said Ms. Christie, "Our traditions in Palos 118 are deeply rooted in the community as was evident during our alumni visit and the positive energy was much appreciated."

The alumni were eager to see the old sections of the school where their gym and library used to be. They were most eager though, to view the classroom with the fireplace they had remembered with fondness. Mr. Meyer obliged the group, and moved a bookcase to reveal the old fireplace. According to the alumni, the fireplace in the kindergarten classroom was intended to make the transition into a school environment an easier one.

"We were all really close," said Michael Kanter, one of the reunion coordinators, "I've always treasured my years at Palos, and in putting this reunion together, I found out everyone else did too."
