From the Desk of Dr. Dubec

It is hard to believe that we are busy making holiday plans and 2011 is already coming to a close.  I am very proud of our students, staff, and parent volunteers who represent Palos 118 with such dignity and respect - from our academic achievements to our philanthropic efforts.

Over the past few weeks, we have been treated to many holiday concerts and events.  The choral, band, and kindergarten programs never disappoint.  Our staff and parent volunteers are dedicated to the success of our students, and it is rewarding to see the pride in their young faces when they perform.

This year especially, it has been heartwarming to witness the generous spirit of the Palos 118 family.  Times still remain difficult for many, but when we teach our children to help others, as shown in the many philanthropic efforts our students participate in, we all benefit.

I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season, and look forward to more  memorable events in 2012 with our staff and students.

Sincerely,

Joseph M. Dubec, Ed.D., J.D.

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon Over Winter Break

 book cover

On December 1st, District 118 began Minli's journey in Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin.  It's not too late to get started.

Students, parents, staff and community members are all invited to embark on this expedition. This story is about a young girl named Minli who lives in a ramshackle hut with her parents. Her father is a wonderful story teller; he tells Chinese folktales of the Jade Dragon and Old Man on the Moon who is said to have the answers to all of life's questions. Read by yourself, with your family, or follow along with our chapter podcasts as we come together in search of the ultimate answer.

Visit our One District One Book web page for book order forms, registration information, schedules, special activities, discussion questions, chapter podcasts, and an overview of our culminating event.

On the evening of February 8, 2012, our journey will conclude. All are invited to gather at Palos South Middle School to celebrate our quest together and demonstrate what each of us has learned along the way.

Palos 118 Philanthropists

Palos South Student Council members collected money, bought, and wrapped gifts for UCP based on wish lists they were given.

Philanthropy is a hallmark of Palos 118, however our students and staff are especially busy during the holidays.

Student Councils at all three schools held holiday gift campaigns for well deserving charitiesPalos East and South student councils collected gifts for the Greater Chicagoland United Cerebral Palsy Foundation (UCP).  Palos West's Student Council collected items for the Alliance for the Children. The Alliance provides toys and clothing to underprivileged children who do not receive assistance from any other source. West had specific collection boxes for each grade level with items such as socks, pajamas, shirts, jeans, sweat shirts, pants and toiletries.

Palos East and South students also brought holiday cheer to Alden Prairie Village Nursing Home residents with their visits this month.

Goodwill at Palos 118 does not stop when the holidays are over.  Charitable drives and fundraisers continue throughout the year.
