Welcome back from what I hope was a rejuvenating and relaxing summer vacation.  The Palos 118 School District staff and administration is excited to begin the 2011-2012 school year on August 24.

We have been busy preparing for the students' arrival with a number of summer projects: Cleaning classrooms and touching up paintwork at all schools, renovating washrooms and replacing carpeting at West, replacing the HVAC unit in the media center and installing a guard rail at South, and installing safety zone school speed signs at East.

Remember, children receive the best education when you and our dedicated teachers work as a team. It's a parent's enthusiasm, support, and involvement that inspires children to do their best; and a teacher's ability to teach what they need to learn. Together we can achieve wonderful things this year.

I encourage you to fully embrace the new school year by taking time from your busy schedule to become involved in the Parent Faculty Association, the Educational Foundation, our schools, and music program. Whether you can give one hour of your time a month, or one hour a week, your help is appreciated. There will be opportunities to sign up for these organizations at the open houses in September.  Consult the contact information below, or the new 2011-2012 calendar/handbook which will be sent home during the first week of school for specific curriculum night dates and times.

District 118's annual Back to School Family Picnic on August 24 at Palos South, from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m., is the perfect way to launch a new year of learning. I look forward to seeing you there.

Wishing you and your children a memorable and successful school year.

Sincerely,

Joseph M. Dubec, Ed.D., J.D.

Dr. Margaret Johnson, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, retired in July after 27 years of service to Palos School District 118.  Dr. Johnson first came to the district in 1981 as a fifth grade teacher, and since then has held many different positions including, but not limited to; ALPS (gifted program) Teacher, Teacher on Assignment for Grant Writing, and Principal at Palos West.  We thank Dr. Johnson for her years of dedicated service to Palos 118 and wish her well.

The Board of Education appointed Deb Balayti Director of Teaching and Learning, combining her current position of Coordinator of Teaching and Learning Technology to include responsibility for the curriculum area.  Deb Balayti began her career in Palos 118 as a fifth grade teacher, and held the positions of Teacher at Large for Technology and most recently as Coordinator of Teaching and Learning.  The Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning position will not be filled as a cost savings measure.
