UHD representatives participate in opening of Lone Star's new Atascocita Center

UHD representatives were on hand to help Lone Star College-Kingwood faculty and staff celebrate the opening of their new satellite center last week in Atascocita.

LSC-Kingwood's new Atascocita Center, located on West Lake Houston Parkway, will offer classes beginning fall 2011.

UHD also will offer business classes at the center in the fall. Students can take their core courses at LSC-Kingwood and then move into business courses at UHD. They can complete the requirements for a Bachelor of Business Administration in general business degree at the center.

"Our objective with the satellite center is to help high school students, who can take Early College classes, and other traditional and nontraditional students become better prepared for their various educational goals. The new building will allow more classroom space and resources to better serve current and future students," said Dr. Katherine Persson, LSC-Kingwood College president.

City changes some parking meters, doubles fine for violators of disabled parking spaces

The City of Houston has changed the parking meters in the lot behind the Student Life Center and increased the fine for unauthorized parking in marked spaces for disabled drivers.

The new meters are solar powered and each meter serves multiple parking spaces. The new meters were operational Wednesday and the cost is 75 cents an hour. The meters accept coins, cash, Visa and MasterCard, according to UHD Parking and Transportation Services. The old meters will be removed during the next three to four weeks. The city also plans to give the lot a facelift in the near future.

The city also recently doubled the fine to $500 for violators who park in disabled parking spaces without the required Texas Department of Motor Vehicles placard or license plate.
