Capital One Financial Literacy and Academic Literacy Institutes bring students to campus
Students from several area high schools are on campus through June 24 for the Capital One Financial Literacy and Academic Literacy Institutes.
Capital One Bank is sponsoring the three-week program along with Project Grad and UHD. Students learn how to manage their money, budget and save, use debt wisely and invest intelligently. Each year the program has a theme. The 2011 program is focusing on food, health and nutrition while exploring how dietary choices impact people's lifestyles and those of their families.
Earlier this week, a chef was on campus to discuss the costs and nutritional value of different types of meals, the costs of meals per day and the expenses of eating out versus eating self-prepared meals. Part of the exercise included making a salad with different ingredients representing different taste groups. The message was about how first-time job holders can stretch their lower salaries and have healthier, better-tasting meals if they learn to cook for themselves.
