UHD graduate participates at school board association conference

Martina Ramos-Rey, a UHD graduate with a Master of Arts in Teaching degree (2010) and a Bachelor of Science in Professional Writing degree (1999), participated on a panel discussion at the Celebrating Educational Opportunities for Students of All Cultures Conference April 29 - 30 at the Eldorado Hotel in Santa Fe, N.M., as part of the collaborative effort of the Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas school board associations.

Ramos-Rey shared her struggles in school after she was diagnosed at age 14 with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. During her chemotherapy and radiation treatments she transferred to Houston's Jefferson Davis High School where she received the support of her principal, teachers and family to successfully earn her high school diploma. While at Jeff Davis, she attended two Jesse Jones Academic Institutes during the summer at UHD. She subsequently enrolled at UHD with a Tenneco Scholarship which UHD matched.

UHD Associate Professor of Urban Education Viola M. Garcia invited Ramos-Rey to share her story and the insights she gained from her experiences at the conference. Ramos-Rey is now a 4th grade English as a Second Language teacher at North Shore Elementary School in the Galena Park Independent School District. Her principal recently notified her that she will present her MAT research on staff development to principals and administrators in Galena Park ISD when school resumes in August.

The Saturday keynote address was given by Pedro Noguera, a professor at New York University and executive director of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. His scholarship and research focuses on the ways in which schools are influenced by social and economic conditions in the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America and throughout the world. His message of pursuing equity and excellence is geared toward districts that serve a diverse population.

Visitors Parking Garage closes June 6 for construction

(Ed. Note: This communication came from David Bradley, Vice President for Administration and Finance.)

This is a reminder that the Visitors' Parking Lot (located beneath the Academic Building) closes effective June 6 for construction. The project will bring inconvenience, but when completed will result in the addition of over 100 close-in parking spaces that will provide more visitor capacity but also more spaces for faculty and staff.

Beginning June 6, all faculty and staff must park on the second level and above. While we'll try to be accommodating as everyone adjusts to this change, fairly soon we'll have to enforce through the issuance of university parking tickets. To read more...
