METRO wants name suggestions for new light rail stations and transit centers

METRO is seeking names for the light rail stations on the new North, East and Southeast lines with the first round of suggestions due by June 30.

The public will then have an opportunity to review the successfully submitted entries before the METRO Board gives final approval later this summer. METRO hopes the station naming process will capture the spirit of the light rail communities with the opportunity to incorporate key cultural institutions, public spaces and historical landmarks into the project. The primary focus will be ensuring that customers of the service can easily identify where they are within the system.

The names submitted must conform to METRO board-approved criteria calling for simple names that are easily understood and remembered by the public, locally and by visitors who are using the system for the first time. Names must be single, short names with less than 26 characters. Stations may not be named for persons living or dead unless the name is already in use for a street intersection, a historically significant landmark or a widely recognized landmark, neighborhood or commercial trademark. More information and a submission form covering the dos and don'ts of station naming are available on the GoMETRORail website.

Residents and businesses on METRO's new East, North and Southeast light rail lines are asked to contact their Community Outreach Offices to learn more about submitting ideas for station names or visit gometrorail.org.

Facilities Management announces campus fire safety systems testing May 16-June 3

Facilities Management will perform semi-annual testing and maintenance of the campus fire detection / notification / suppression systems and related elevator fire service re-call, air handler shut-downs, fire-door hold-open devices and stair pressurization controls May 16 through June 3 in all campus buildings.

This testing must be performed during normal business hours due to the size of the systems, the contractors involved and the cost of the labor required to perform the work. Please consider this an opportunity for the university community to become familiar with these fire and life safety systems and the campus emergency public address system.

An announcement will be made over the PA system prior to the alarms being sounded to inform the occupants of the test. The alarms and strobe lights will then be engaged briefly and certified by the technicians. An announcement will be made after the conclusion of each segment of the audible and visual alarm testing.

For information, contact Chris McCall, Assistant Vice President - Facilities Management Department, at mccallc@uhd.edu.
