Guerrilla Girls address issues affecting women, people of color in performance

Guerrilla Girls on Tour, an internationally acclaimed anonymous theater collective, will perform "Feminists Are Funny" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, in the Cullen Robertson Auditorium. (Note: this location is different from the earlier story.)

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. for this free event. The performance addresses the lack of opportunities for women and people of color and explores the combination of performance and visual art. The 70-minute play is an "energetic romp through their herstory; an up-to-date account of their latest actions in politics, the performing arts and the media; a recreation of some of their street theater protests and a look at some of the funniest female activists and their accomplishments."

The performance will end with a discussion with the audience and is designed to educate the community about the current state of sexism at the same time proving that feminists are funny. The performance is sponsored by UHD's College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the O'Kane Theatre, the O'Kane Gallery and the UHD Cultural Enrichment Center.

Guerrilla Girls on Tour is an anonymous touring theater company of 26 women trained in a variety of comedic theater techniques who develop unique and outrageous activist plays, performance art and street theater.

The troupe has presented more than 200 performances and workshops around the world addressing reproductive rights, war, sex trafficking, hunger, herstory/history/hirstory and violence against women. In order to put the focus of their work on the issues they address, each member works under the name of a dead female artist and performs wearing a gorilla mask.
