UHD's First Generation Student Project will host a free pizza lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 7, in the Coffeehouse, third floor, Academic Building.

 

Ron Beebe, assistant professor, will present "Assessing Critical Thinking Across Capstone Projects in a Master of Arts in Teaching Program" from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday, March 7, room A-405, Academic Building. 

 

The application deadline has been extended to Monday, March 7, for the 10th annual UHD Student Research Conference, sponsored by the Scholars Academy.

 

The Community Involvement Center is hosting Community Involvement Day from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, March 8, in the Special Events Room, A-300, Academic Building.

 

A UT Employee Assistance Program representative will present the course, "Breathing Easy," from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in the Library Event room, N-420, One Main Building.

 

The Professional Society of Criminal Justice Students will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in room C-212, Commerce Street Building, for a presentation by a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission representative.

 

The Sports and Fitness Intramural Soccer League is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at McReynolds Middle School, 5910 Market St., and teams and players can sign up now.

 

Center for Public Deliberation and Cultural Enrichment Center are co-sponsoring a discussion, "Judaism, Christianity, Islam: Information and Inter-religious Dialogue," from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in the Cullen Robertson Auditorium.

 

The UHD Catholic Students Association is sponsoring an Ash Wednesday Mass at noon Wednesday, March 9, in the Cullen Robertson Auditorium, third floor, Academic Building, which will be celebrated by the Rev. Dat Hoang from the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston Office of Vocations.

UHD hosts Fulbright Arts Festival

UHD hosted the Fulbright Arts Festival on Friday, March 4, in the Cullen Robertson Auditorium featuring former Fulbright recipients in the Houston area. The Fulbright Program is an international educational exchange program. The following former Fulbright recipients from UHD, and the countries where they studied, participated in the event:

Jean DeWitt, Mauritius (1991-1992)

 Patricia Golemon, Taiwan (2005-2006)

Isabelle Ganz who was a Fulbright in Music to Israel (1997) coordinated the program. The event was co-sponsored by the Houston/Southeast Texas Chapter, Fulbright Association; the UHD Department of English and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department through a grant from the Fulbright Association in Washington, D.C. Catholic Students Association sponsors Ash Wednesday Mass March 9

The UHD Catholic Students Association is sponsoring an Ash Wednesday Mass at noon Wednesday, March 9, in the Cullen Robertson Auditorium, third floor, Academic Building, which will be celebrated by the Rev. Dat Hoang from the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston Office of Vocations.

The Community Involvement Center is hosting Community Involvement Day from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, March 8, in the Special Events Room, A-300, Academic Building.

 

The event showcases volunteer opportunities available at many area nonprofit organizations where students can share their time and talents to help the community.

Presentation addresses the basics of Judaism, Christianity and Islam

The Center for Public Deliberation and the Cultural Enrichment Center are co-sponsoring a discussion, "Judaism, Christianity, Islam: Information and Inter-religious Dialogue," from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in the Cullen Robertson Auditorium.

 

The speakers are: 

  • Rabbi Stuart Federow, Congregation Shaar Hashalom and host of the KNTH 1070 AM radio program "Show of Faith"  
  • Erik Luchetta, Erik Luchetta Ministries
  • Erkan Kurt, Institute for Interfaith Dialog   

The moderator is Paul L. Fortunato, UHD assistant professor of English.The speakers will give brief presentations followed by a question and answer session with the audience. Free refreshments will be available.

Application deadline for Student Research Conference extended 

The application deadline has been extended to Monday, March 7, for the 10th annual UHD Student Research Conference, sponsored by the Scholars Academy.

 

The conference will be Friday, April 15, and is open to students within the Colleges of Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, Public Service and Sciences and Technology. Conference planners expect to have more than 100 research and project posters along with oral presentations. They also anticipate having numerous representatives from academia and industry in attendance. A flier is  available here.

Teams for Intramural Soccer League now forming; season starts March 8

The Sports and Fitness Intramural Soccer League is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at McReynolds Middle School, 5910 Market St., and teams and players can sign up now.

 

The fee is $20 per team. The Intramural Soccer League will last about five weeks. The league is open to UHD students, faculty, staff and fitness center members. Men and women can participate. To register, stop by the Student Life Center, call 713-221-8225 or visit the IM Soccer page.

Speakers address 'History in the Making: The Middle East and the World'

The Cultural Enrichment Center in collaboration with Ethnic Studies and Philosophy is sponsoring a symposium, "History in the Making: The Middle East and the World."   

 

The next presentation will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, in room N-1099, One Main Building, by Elora Shehabuddin, associate professor of Humanities and Political Science at Rice University, who will present "Feminism, Empire, and Muslim Women."  

 

The first presentation was March 2 by Ussama S. Makdisi, professor of History and chair of Arab Studies at Rice University, who discussed "Faith Misplaced: On the Promise of US-Arab Relations."

UTEAP offers 'Breathing Easy' course 

A UT Employee Assistance Program representative will present the course, "Breathing Easy," from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in the Library Event room, N-420, One Main Building.

 

Springtime in Houston can mean high pollen counts and sometimes dangerous molds.Healthy individuals or those with respiratory concerns such as asthma or allergies can benefit from attending this brown bag luncheon which is open to faculty, staff and student workers. Drinks and cookies will be provided.

Faculty members reprise assessment conference presentations on campus 

A number of UHD faculty had presentations accepted for the 2011 Texas A&M Assessment Conference Feb. 20-22 and will reprise their presentations at UHD March 7, 8 and 10.

 

The conference is one of the largest and most influential assessment and institutional effectiveness events of its kind. Individuals interested in critical thinking, authentic measurement of student learning, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, creating a culture of assessment within a department or discipline or learning more about how colleagues are assessing and improving learning within their departments, are invited to attend one or more of the sessions noted below. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP here so organizers can prepare an adequate number of handouts.

"Assessing Critical Thinking Across Capstone Projects in a Master of Arts in Teaching Program"

 

Critical thinking is an essential skill for today's urban educators.This session addresses the process and outcomes of assessment. Projects incorporate a wide array of options ranging from curriculum design to research projects and evaluation practices including assessment of student work. While the presentation illustrates the application of assessing critical thinking in the Masters of Arts in Teaching, Beebe's strategies can be modified and applied within the context of many different disciplines.

Veterans Services offers Peer-to-Peer Workshops on Wednesdays 

UHD's Veterans Services is offering Peer-to-Peer Workshops from 2 to 3 p.m. every Wednesday beginning March 16 in room S-290, One Main Building.

The workshops can be helpful for military personnel returning from Iraq or Afghanistan or who have experienced other difficult situations in the military. The workshops provide a place to talk to and interact with other veterans.

 

The workshop's goal is to help active duty, reserves, guard, veterans, their families and others who suffer from the effects of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI) or military sexual assault to connect to the help and assistance available for them and the benefits they have earned.

 

Trauma survivors with PTSD often experience problems in their intimate and family relationships or close friendships. PTSD involves symptoms that interfere with trust, emotional closeness, communication, responsible assertiveness and effective problem solving.

Free practice tests available March 11

The Scholars Academy office has made arrangements with Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions for free practice tests for the GRE, LSAT, MCAT and OAT/DAT at 10 a.m. Friday, March 11, at UHD. 

 

Students need to register online with Kaplan. The tests will be given in five different rooms. See the flier for details. Seating is limited so students should reserve spots as soon as possible. Kaplan will provide a score analysis and strategies to help students prepare for their test day.The GRE and MCAT exams will be computerized tests.
