UHD's Sports and Fitness Center is sponsoring an Intramural Free Throw and 3-Point Contest at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in the Student Life Center. 

The UHD Pre-Law Forum will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in room A-350 in the Academic Building, featuring a panel of attorneys who will provide information to students interested in attending law school.

Speakers address 'History in the Making: The Middle East and the World'

The Cultural Enrichment Center in collaboration with Ethnic Studies and Philosophy is sponsoring a symposium, "History in the Making: The Middle East and the World" featuring presentations Wednesday, March 2, and Wednesday, March 9, in room N-1099, One Main Building.

Volunteers skyline
UHD student groups plant trees to benefit north side neighborhood  

The Community Involvement Center took volunteers from the Bilingual Student Organization, the Student Veteran's Organization, the Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority and the Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Student Honor Society on Saturday, Feb. 26, to participate in Operation Plant a Tree with District H City Council Member Ed Gonzalez, District 140 State Rep. Armando Walle and Trees for Houston. The group planted trees along esplanades at Jensen Drive and Tidwell. Liza Alonzo, associate director of Community Involvement, coordinated the event.

Free practice tests available March 11

The Scholars Academy office has made arrangements with Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions for free practice tests for the GRE, LSAT, MCAT and OAT/DAT at 10 a.m. Friday, March 11, at UHD. 

 

Students need to register online with Kaplan. The tests will be given in five different rooms. See the flier for details. Seating is limited so students should reserve spots as soon as possible. Kaplan will provide a score analysis and strategies to help students prepare for their test day.The GRE and MCAT exams will be computerized tests.

Presentation addresses the basics of Judaism, Christianity and Islam

Center for Public Deliberation and Cultural Enrichment Center are co-sponsoring a discussion, "Judaism, Christianity, Islam: Information and Inter-religious Dialogue," from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in the Cullen Robertson Auditorium.

 

The speakers are: 

  • Rabbi Stuart Federow, Congregation Shaar Hashalom and host of the KNTH 1070 AM radio program "Show of Faith"  
  • Erik Luchetta, Erik Luchetta Ministries
  • Erkan Kurt, Institute for Interfaith Dialog   

The moderator is Paul L. Fortunato, UHD assistant professor of English.The speakers will give brief presentations followed by a question and answer session with the audience. Free refreshments will be available.

African-American Symposium of Undergraduate Research

An African-American Symposium of Undergraduate Research was held Monday, Feb. 28, as part of UHD's Black History Month activities. The symposium showcased UHD's undergraduate students and included several student panels that critically addressed a range of subjects related to the African-American experience. First Generation Student Project hosts pizza lunch on March 7

UHD's First Generation Student Project hosting a free pizza lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 7, in the Coffeehouse, third floor, Academic Building.

Application deadline for Student Research Conference extended 

The application deadline has been extended to Monday, March 7, for the 10th annual UHD Student Research Conference, sponsored by the Scholars Academy.

 

The conference will be Friday, April 15, and is open to students within the Colleges of Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, Public Service and Sciences and Technology. Conference planners expect to have more than 100 research and project posters along with oral presentations. They also anticipate having numerous representatives from academia and industry in attendance. A flier is available here.

Guest lecturer discusses his new book, 'The Invisible Jim Crow' 

The Cultural Enrichment Center sponsored Michael Tillotson's lecture "The Invisible Jim Crow: Contemporary Ideological Threats to the Internal Security of African Americans," Monday, Feb. 28.
Tillotson's new book,"Invisible Jim Crow," is schedule for release next week. He received his doctorate at Temple University and is a research fellow at the Molefi Kete Asante Institute. Information on the book is available here

The Department of Social Sciences sponsored a panel discussion, "Uprisings in the Middle East," in the Cullen Robertson Auditorium featuring Richard Sindelar, former deputy director of the Office of Near East and South Asia Analysis in the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research, and Nivien Saleh, professor and Middle East expert at the Center of International Studies, St. Thomas University. Teams for Intramural Soccer League now forming; season starts March 8

The Sports and Fitness Intramural Soccer League is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at McReynolds Middle School and teams and players can sign up now.

 

The fee is $20 per team. The Intramural Soccer League will last about five weeks. The league is open to UHD students, faculty, staff and fitness center members. Men and women can participate. To register, stop by the Student Life Center, call 713-221-8225 or visit the IM Soccer page.

Pre-Law Forum provides information on law schools and legal fields March 3

The UHD Pre-Law Forum will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in room A-350 in the Academic Building, featuring a panel of attorneys who will provide information to students interested in attending law school.

 

The forum is free and open to the public. The Pre-Law Association is sponsoring the forum which was originally scheduled for early February, but was postponed due to the weather. Topics will include law school admissions, the LSAT exam and different law fields. Panel members also will discuss their law school experiences.

Sports and Fitness holds Free Throw and 3-point Contest March 3

UHD's Sports and Fitness Center is sponsoring an Intramural Free Throw and 3-Point Contest at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in the Student Life Center. 

 

The entry fee is $5 and preregistration is required. The Intramural Free Throw and 3-Point Contest is a one-day event and will be held in the West Gym. The event is open to UHD students, faculty, staff and fitness center members. Men and women can participate.

Sports and Fitness workshop addresses 'Food Labels, Portion Sizes and More'
 

UHD Sports and Fitness is sponsoring the workshop, "Food Labels, Portion Sizes and More," from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, March 4, in room N-420, One Main Building.

 

The workshop is free to UHD students, faculty and staff. It will cover topics such as the meaning of food labels including the percentages, the components of a balanced meal and optimum calorie intake as well as the difference between monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and  their purpose in our bodies.

Professional Society of Criminal Justice Students will meet March 8

The Professional Society of Criminal Justice Students will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in room C-212, Commerce Street Building, for a presentation by a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission representative.

Tinto skyline
Tinto discusses student engagement and retention at UHD
 

Vincent Tinto, nationally-known professor from Syracuse University, discussed "Promoting Engagement and Retention in an Urban Campus" last week at UHD. Tinto has written extensively on student success in higher education and the positive impact that institutions have experienced with learning communities. Tinto did a formal presentation, met with faculty on improving students' reading success and conducted an informal question and answer session. Tinto emphasized the importance of early intervention with at-risk students, regular assessment, tutorial groups and adapting teaching techniques to help students learn.

UHD hosts Fulbright Arts Festival on March 4 featuring UHD professors

UHD is hosting the Fulbright Arts Festival at 7 p.m. Friday, March 4, in the Wilhelmina Cullen Robertson Auditorium followed by a reception at 9 p.m. in the adjacent Coffeehouse.

The festival features the following UHD former Fulbright recipients:

Work for METRORail expansion continues; impacts UHD community

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to stay alert and give themselves extra time when traveling through construction zones on North Main Street.

 

Construction in preparation of the north METRORail line is in full swing and routes and pedestrian walkways will continue to change frequently throughout spring semester.

 

Chris McCall, assistant vice president for Facilities Management, said signage will direct pedestrians to safe, accessible pathways between buildings and parking lots north of the One Main Building. UHD Police and METRO Police will assist in directing foot and vehicular traffic from time to time as needed.

 

McCall says the work should be completed by fall 2012.
