'Storied Beads' exhibit opens; artist discusses work with gallery visitors

The exhibition, "Storied Beads: The Art of Teri Greeves," opened last night in the O'Kane Gallery and will continue through Thursday, March 31.
Teri Greeves, a Kiowa and beadwork artist, was featured recently on the PBS television series, Craft in America
. She won the Eric and Barbara Dobkin Fellowship from the School of American Research in 2003. Greeves' work has received numerous accolades including winning Best of Show at the 1999 Indian Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Greeves' UHD exhibition includes her works Indian Parade Umbrella
, an umbrella of beaded panels where each panel reflects a remembered character; Hoop Dance
, a pair of size 17 beaded tennis shoes that depicts a dance of young Native people; and Slick and Jazz-beau,
a wall mounted work that depicts the second husband of her grandmother and his brother. The exhibit also includes wearable items such as Concho Belt, Floral Cabochon Bracelet
and Clutch Purse.
The O'Kane Gallery is located on the third floor of UHD's One Main Building. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.Back to Top
|Faculty Awards Committee announces award finalists
The Faculty Awards Committee has announced the finalists for the 2011 Faculty Awards.
"Please congratulate any of your colleagues who appear on this list," said Lisa Morano, associate professor and Faculty Awards Committee chair. "We have many talented faculty at UHD and choosing finalists in each category can be difficult and humbling."

|Professor Hank Roubicek signs new book Sunday at the Brazos Bookstore
UHD Professor of Communication Hank Roubicek will talk to readers about his new book, "So What's Your Story? Discovering the Story in You," at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, in the Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet St., in Houston.
Roubicek, who teaches in UHD's Department of Arts and Humanities in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, writes about the theory and practice of storytelling and incorporates student stories as well as excerpts from his radio show, "Story Time," on KPFT in Houston.
Readers will enjoy learning more about storytelling while reading inspiring accounts and testimonials. The book is a textbook and a volume that will appeal to the public. Professor Roubicek has been at UHD since 1983 and his research interests include communication for law enforcement practitioners and the impact of human narratives in conversation.
The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Saturday, staying open later as needed when special events are scheduled.Back to Top
|Meet the Industry features business leaders at the College of Business
|The College of Business is holding its second Meet the Industry event for business students from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today in the Shea Street Building.
Keynote speakers include: Ronald C. Green, Houston City Controller; Walter Ulrich, president and CEO, Houston Technology Center; Thomas Smouse, human resources director, Noble Energy, Inc. and Will Smith, business consultant, Workforce Solutions.
The event will introduce students to a variety of industries and careers involving Finance, Business, Computer Information Systems, Supply Chain, Accounting, Insurance & Risk Management, International Business, Management, and Marketing.

|Risk Management hosts webinar on the 'Psychology of Fraud' on Feb. 15
The Office of Risk Management and Compliance is hosting the webinar, Psychology of Fraud: Why "Good People" Do "Bad Things," from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, in room A-711, Academic Building, with webinar speaker Frank Navran.
Attendees should arrive between 11:45 a.m. and noon, and pizza, drinks and cookies will be available. RSVP by Monday, Feb. 14, to Mary Cook at firstname.lastname@example.org.

|UHD essay contest deadline extended; enter by Friday, Feb. 18|
UHD students who took English 1300, 1301 or 1302, fall semester 2010 can compete for hundreds of dollars in book voucher prizes. All they need to do is submit an essay they wrote in last semester's English class to the Sigma Tau Delta Freshman Essay Contest.
All English Department professors will now accept entries until noon, Friday, Feb. 18, or students may turn their papers in between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday - Friday at the English Department office, room S-1045 in the One Main Building.
Students will compete for book voucher prizes of $400, first place; $200, second place; $100 third place and $50 for fourth and fifth places.
To be eligible, students must attend UHD this semester. Entries must be typed and double-spaced, with a student's name, ID number, phone number and the English class listed in the upper left-hand corner. If sources are used, students should attach their bibliographic source page. Contest organizers say using sources is welcomed, but not required.
Sigma Tau Delta is an international English honor society. Students who have questions can talk to an English professor or email UHD Associate Professor JoAnn Pavletich, Director of Composition, at email@example.com.
|Vincent Tinto's presentation rescheduled for Friday, Feb. 25
The presentation by Vincent Tinto, nationally-known professor from Syracuse University, has been rescheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25.
Tinto was originally scheduled to speak Feb. 4, but his appearance was canceled due to winter storm conditions. He will present "Promoting Engagement and Retention in an Urban Campus" at 10 a.m. in the Wilhelmina Cullen Robertson Auditorium, third floor, Academic Building.
Tinto developed his presentation specifically for UHD, using enrollment and retention data and other information UHD provided. An informal session with time for questions will occur at 1 p.m. in the Special Events Rooms, third floor, Academic Building, and will focus on linking student success initiatives to strategic planning. Both events are open to the University community.
Tinto has written extensively on student success in higher education and the positive impact that institutions have experienced with learning communities. His visit will build on work UHD has already done through its Quality Enhancement Program and Achieving the Dream initiatives.

Black History Month activities include film series; next screening is Feb. 15

Several events and activities are under way in recognition of Black History Month including a film festival.
The next two films address the notions of beauty and the color complex and explore the many ways in which the personal is political. Chris Rock's recent documentary, "Good Hair," will be screened from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, in room N-1099, One Main Building. The original film version (1934) of "Imitation of Life" will end the series Feb. 22 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in room N-1099, One Main Building.
The film series began with Marlon Riggs's important "Ethnic Notions," shown last week, and resumed this week with Spike Lee's 2000 feature film, "Bamboozled." Paired faculty and student hosts introduce each film, provide context and highlight some of the more significant aspects of each film. After each screening, audience members are encouraged to raise questions and discuss the films with the panelists and each other.

|Spring Hispanic Film Series has Oscar theme; next showing is Thursday
The next screening in the Spring 2011 Hispanic Film Series will be of "Volver" at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, in room B-221, Shea Street Building.
Penelope Cruz stars in the film by Pedro Almodóvar and her performance earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. The film is rated R.
This semester's theme is Oscar. All the films (but one) were either nominated for or won an Academy Award. Directors include Gutiérrez Iñárritu and Almodóvar. Films include "La historia oficial" and "El secreto de sus ojos." Actors include stars like Cruz and Gael García Bernal. ¡Vengan a ver! All films are in Spanish with English subtitles, unless otherwise noted. The films will be shown on Mondays and Thursdays. A flier is available here.

April 25: "Sin dejar huella" (Mexico, 2007): The film is not rated.

Information Technology and the Office of Financial Aid are working together to implement a new financial aid system that will be integrated with Banner, our Student Records System.
Please make a note of the following dates/times that will affect access to some services during the implementation period; these dates have already been coordinated with key areas on campus:
Start Time/Date: 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24
Expected End Time/Date: User Test Mode in key offices will be available on Tuesday morning, March 1; Access for all users will be available by 8 a.m. Wednesday, March 2
The following services will be unavailable during the implementation period:
· Banner (Student Records System)
· Faculty & Staff e-Services (payments, personal data & class roster)
· Student e-Services (payments, schedules, personal data and grades)
· Student Account information access via e-Services (usernames and passwords for GatorMail, Network ID & Blackboard Vista*)
*NOTE: Access to Blackboard Vista WILL be available during this time.
In addition, access to Fortis and network share drives (S & H) will be unavailable intermittently between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, for maintenance.

Women's Club Volleyball Team began season Wednesday against HCC at home
|Claudia Avalos is the woman in the middle for UHD volleyball.|
The UHD women's volleyball club team opened the 2011 season Wednesday against Houston Community College-Central in the UHD Student Life Center.
Admission to all the matches is free. The Gators are coming off another successful season which saw them reach the Houston Club Sports Conference Championship Tournament for the ninth consecutive year. The team is led by Coach Alicia Nava who is entering her fourth year at the helm.

|World record earns UHD powerlifter a spot on national magazine's cover
UHD Club Team Powerlifter Linda Okoro is featured on the cover of the February issue of Powerlifting USA Magazine. Okoro is a senior majoring in marketing. She also is completing an associate's degree in fashion merchandising at Houston Community College.
The cover appearance recognizes her world record lift at the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters World Champsionships (WABDL Worlds) in November. Check it out here.
Okoro is the second UHD lifter to appear on the cover. The first was Club Team Coach John Hudson, assistant professor of English.

|Community Involvement Center Spring Blood Drive set for Feb. 15-16
The Community Involvement Center is hosting its spring blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 15 and 16, in the Coffee House, third floor, Academic Building.
The blood drive benefits the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. To sign up to donate blood, visit www.eblooddrive.org, enter a Log-In ID or create an ID for new users and follow the instructions to schedule an appointment (Enter Sponsor Code 3731).
Individuals who don't know the time they will have available to donate until the day of the drive can sign up at the Coffee House donation center.
